A large rare Chinese wooden ‘shoulao’ sculpture. This is an intricate wooden root carving representing Shou Lao, the Taoist deity of longevity. The sculpture is carved from many small piece of tree root, creatively using the natural twists and textures of the wood to form the figure and base. Shou Lao is depicted as an elderly man with a long flowing beard and a high domed forehead, symbolic of wisdom and long life. He holds a staff in one hand and appears to be resting.His robe and body merge seamlessly with the gnarled, textured wood, blending figure and nature into one harmonious form. Above his head, the wood extends into branching forms, adding a dynamic and organic quality to the piece. The sculpture stands on a rugged base, also made of interwoven roots, adding to the natural aesthetic. The whole composition is a beautiful example of traditional Chinese root carving art (根雕), showcasing both craftsmanship and cultural symbolism. 19/20th Century. H: 124cm. Good condition.
