A Roman bronze helmet of the Buggenum type, 1st century B.C. The almost hemispherical skull completely preserved, extending upwards into a hollow, cone-shaped knob, onto which a crest could be attached, directly below which is a narrowed section. The lower edge of the forehead and side pieces is angled outwards with a slight downwards slant, creating a flange that projects for approx. 0.5 to 1 cm. This extends continuously around the back of the skull as a rim, measuring 3.5 cm at its widest point, forming the almost horizontal neck guard. A hole struck from above in the centre of the neck guard, in which the loop was fastened for the three-point mounting (there were other loops on the lower edges of the cheek pieces, these no longer in place). Ornamental incisions around the edge to indicate a turned flange. Hinge straps attached with rivet pins on both sides of the interior, into which a hinge pin was originally inserted to mount the cheek pieces, which have not survived. Tool marks still clearly visible on the outside, caused by twisting off the helmet. Superlative metal substance. Varyingly stained, green patina, becoming azurite coloured in places around the edges. The patina with no spots of corrosion in the underlying metal skull. The sheet metal 3 to almost 5 mm thick at the edges. Height 23 cm. Length from the forehead to the neck guard 26 cm. Weight 1.54 kg. As with virtually all known specimens of helmets of the Buggenum type to date (except for lot no. 1530 in Hermann Historica's Auction 63 in October 2011), the cheek pieces have been lost. The infantry helmet in pristine condition, with no replacements or deformations, dating from the period of the Roman civil wars of the Caesarean and post-Caesarean era until the beginning of the Imperial Era. Vollständig erhaltene, nahezu halbkugelförmige Helmkalotte, die oben in einen hohlen, kegelstumpfförmigen Knauf mit darunter liegender Einschnürung übergeht, auf den ein Helmbusch aufgesteckt werden konnte. Der untere Rand an Stirn und Seiten nach außen und leicht schräg nach unten abgewinkelt, sodass ein 0,5 – 1 cm breiter Steg entsteht. Dieser verbreitert sich am hinteren Teil der Kalotte kontinuierlich zu einem maximal 3,5 cm breiten, nahezu horizontalen Nackenschutz. Mittig in diesen wurde von oben ein Loch eingeschlagen, in dem die Öse für die Dreipunktaufhängung befestigt war (weitere Ösen befanden sich am unteren Rand der nicht mehr vorhandenen Wangenklappen). Rundum am Rand ist durch Ritzverzierung eine Bördelung angedeutet. Auf beiden Innenseiten befinden sich die mit je einem Nietstift befestigten Scharnierbänder, in denen ehemals ein Scharnierstift zur Aufhängung der (verlorenen) Wangenklappen gelagert war. Auf der Außenseite sind die Spuren des Abdrehens der Kalotte gut sichtbar. Ausgezeichnete metallische Substanz. Unterschiedlich fleckige grüne Patina, die an den Rändern teilweise ins Azuritfarbene übergeht. Die Patina ohne Korrosionen in dem darunterliegenden metallischen Helmkörper. Dicke des Blechs an den Rändern 3 bis fast 5 mm. Höhe 23 cm. Länge von Stirn- bis Nackenschutz 26 cm. Gewicht 1,54 kg. Wie bei fast allen bisher bekannten Exemplaren der Helme vom Typ Buggenum (Ausnahme: Los 1530 aus Auktion 63 von Hermann Historica im Oktober 2011) sind die Wangenklappen nicht erhalten. Ausgezeichnet erhaltener Infanteriehelm ohne Ergänzungen und Deformationen aus der Epoche der römischen Bürgerkriege cäsarischer und nachcäsarischer Zeit bis in die früheste Kaiserzeit hinein.
