Lot 6340
A "Schellenbaum" for the SS
Original handle, square-stock steel core with threaded top, 94 cm long crescent with maker's logo plate (appears to be "HELMRING"), gilt finish eagle heads, original black and white horsehair plumes, bell with wreath coated with gilt/bronze finish. 31 cm diameter bell, alternating small brass finish bells and vaulted, six-pointed stars. Conditionally, several minor dents, one in crescent, several in bell including one substantial dent, finish is undamaged. Small dents on side of ball finial below eagle's feet and above thread socket. Crescent has alternating swastikas and brass bells suspended from base. Horsehair plumes have proper fittings and are not excessively 'shedding'. 36 cm diameter center starburst, SS insignia on obverse, swastika on reverse, made specifically for Third Reich, not a repurposed Imperial Era example. Tapered steel bottom rod fits into black-painted turned wood handle, has round stop on rod and both pieces are drilled for a screw to hold them together. Steel rod is threaded at top end, fits into female thread socket at base of eagle (37 cm wingspan). The primary pieces (bell, starburst, crescent) have rectangular apertures in center allowing them to remain fixed in place with proper alignment. Bottom spacer fitting missing, replacement from imperial era with manufacturer engraving from Ferdinand Moser in Düsseldorf, fails to cover 5 cm of the handle which is unfinished and clearly intended to fit into a spacer fitting. An extraordinary and impressive item, the dominant center of attention in any display. Chrome finish worn only in areas where pieces fit together. Complete except for bottom spacer fitting and banner. Height circa 235 cm.
