A wheellock carbine from the personal guard of Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, Prince Archbishop of Salzburg, circa 1600
The octagonal barrel turning to round with a cannon muzzle. Smooth bore in 10 mm calibre. Dovetailed brass sights. The proof mark "SVL" and hen struck at the root of the barrel, above which the master's mark "VK" for Valentin Klatt of Suhl. The lock fitted with an external wheel.
Safety-catch, spring-lock pan cover and mounted cocking lever. Iron trigger guard. The full shaft made of walnut with lavish inlays of engraved and blackened bone. The replaced wooden ramrod with bone tip. Length 89 cm.
Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau (1559 - 1617) was Prince Archbishop of Salzburg. His personal trabant guard, comprising approx. 100 men, was one of Europe's most magnificently equipped guards. Similar carbines can be found in numerous distinguished collections, such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
