In einer weiten Landschaft hat sich eine kleine Jagdgesellschaft versammelt: Im Zentrum sieht man einen elegant gekleideten Reiter, begleitet von seinen Dienern. Vor ihm befindet sich eine Meute von Hunden, die sich auf einen Eber stürzt. Die hohen Berge im rechten Hintergrund verorten das Geschehen in den Süden. Dieses Gemälde ist 1654 entstanden, kurz nachdem Abraham Hondius seine eigene Werkstatt in Rotterdam eingerichtet hat. Es folgt im Bildaufbau dem Kompositionsmuster klassischer Jagdstücke. Das Kolorit ist, wie Rapp bemerkt hat, charakteristisch für das Frühwerk von Hondius und wird von kühlen, eleganten Tönen bestimmt. Deutet man die Szene richtig, so weist der elegante Reiter seine Diener an, die Jagdhunde zu bändigen, die sich in den Eber festgebissen haben. Der Diener, der am Fuße des Baums kniet, müht sich vergeblich, er zieht einen Hund am Hinterbein und hält den anderen am Halsband fest. Auch wenn es sich um ein Jagdstück handelt und sich der Reiter im Zentrum der Komposition befindet - Protagonisten des Bildes sind die kämpfenden Tiere, die Hondius später ohne Figurenstaffage dargestellt hat. Der völlig verdrehte Körper des weißen Hundes, der sich am Kopf des Ebers festgebissen hat und gleichzeitig vom Diener zurückgezogen wird, die Brutalität der Hundemeute, die sich wie von Sinnen auf den Eber stürzen, oder der verzweifelte Blick des unterlegenen Wildschweines. Hondius wurde für diese dramatische, zuweilen brutale, aber auch empathische Darstellung kämpfender Tiere besonders geschätzt. The central, elegantly dressed rider is shown accompanied by attendants, watching his dogs set upon a boar. The mountains in the background to the right of the work indicate a southern landscape. This work was painted in 1654, shortly after Abraham Hondius opened his own studio in Rotterdam. The image uses the compositional scheme of classic hunt paintings. As Rapp has pointed out, the work's palette is dominated by the cool, elegant tones typical of Hondius' early works. The scene could be interpreted as the rider telling his footmen to get the dogs under control. The attendant crouching at the foot of the tree is trying unsuccessfully to pull one dog away by its back leg and another by its collar. Although this is a hunting scene and the horseman occupies the centre of the composition, the animals are the true protagonists, and Hondius later painted them again without the figures. The contorted body of the white dog with its teeth sunk fully into the boar's head as the footman tries to restrain it, the brutality with which the pack has set upon its quarry and the terrified expression in the eyes of the boar all illustrate Hondius' dramatic, often brutal, but always empathetic way of depicting fighting animals.
