Acrylic on canvas France, 1956/1989 Victor Vasarely (1906-1997) – Hungarian-French artist, inventor of Op art Signed ‘Vasarely’, dated ‘1956/89’, titled ‘SONKA’, as well as numbered and inscribed ‘P. 1360 VASARELY’ on the reverse in black felt tip pen This work is accompanied by a photo certificate by Pierre Vasarely, Aix-en-Provence, December 1st, 2013 The painting will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné by Mme Michèle Vasarely Dimensions: 130.5 x 88.5 cm Frame: 137 x 95 cm Good condition Provenance: Studio of the artist; private collection, Milano In his highly structured works Vasarely explored depth and the illusion of movement. As early as the 1950s, Vasarely was using preliminary scale drawings as programs for his compositions. Besides, he had already developed a certain color system to create new linear forms and shapes. Vasarely’s artistic approach – his ‘plastic’ programs – draw parallels with computer programming and computer art of today and show how far ahead Vasarely was of his time.  Condition: The painting is in good condition, consistent with age. The canvas has verso been backed with fabric along the edges. The paint surface is minimally rubbed and shows very light remains of dust and dirt. The canvas is minimally dented in the upper center, slightly visible to the naked eye. The stretcher measures 130.5 x 88.5 cm and the frame 137 x 95 cm. Victor Vasarely (1906-1997) Victor Vasarely was born in Hungary as Gyözö Vásárhelyi. He moved to Paris in 1930 where he worked successfully as a commercial graphic artist, all the while researching the optical and emotional opportunities of several different graphical methods. He came to the result that geometrical means can create sensual perceptions that convey new ideas about space, matter and energy. He created an independent geometric abstraction whose variations lead to image patterns with kinetic effects. The artist arranged a wattle of geometric forms in bright colors so that the eye perceives it as a fluctuating movement. Vasarely had a huge influence on the Op art and is sometimes even named as one of its founders. He participated regularly in the documenta between 1955 and 1968 and designed the official logo for the XX. Olympics in Munich. The Vasarely Museum, established in 1976, can be found in his city of birth, Pécs. A second one, opened in 1987, is located in the castle Zichy in Budapest. Vasarely died in 1997 in Paris.
