Dabei gebraucht er weder Nägel noch Schrauben. Das verwendete Huali Holz war zu Zeiten der Ming Dynastie ein begehrtes Material, welches allein Gebrauchsgegenständen wie Möbeln vorbehalten war. Ai Weiwei erweist diesem Holz größte Ehre, indem er für seine faszinierenden Raumplastiken als alleiniges Material gebraucht, stellt andererseits die Traditionen seines Herkunftskontextes auf den Kopf, indem er aus ihm die überdimensionale Reproduktion eines Katzenspielzeugs für den Kunstraum kreiert. Der Titel der Serie geht auf das gleichnamige, von Leonardo da Vinci illustrierte Mathematiktraktat von Luca Pacioli aus dem Jahr 1497 zurück. Ebendort fand Ai Weiwei nach Fertigstellung seiner Serie ein ganz ähnliches Konstrukt, eine „Sphere“ aus Quadraten und Dreiecken. [3095] Provenienz: Courtesy of the artist Ai Weiwei’s work “F-Size” forms part of his series “Divina Proportione,” for which the artist, inspired by a toy belonging to his cat, recreated a geometric polyhedron in wood, using traditional techniques from the time of the Ming dynasty. In building the structure, he used neither nails nor screws. The Huali wood used was a much sought-after material during the Ming period, and was used exclusively to produce objects of daily use such as furniture. Ai Weiwei pays homage to this wood by using it as the sole material for his fascinating sculptures, while on the other hand turning the traditions of its original context upside down by creating a colossal reproduction of a cat’s plaything for an artistic space. The title of the series refers to the mathematical treatise by Luca Pacioli from 1497, which was illustrated by Leonardo da Vinci. In it, Ai Weiwei had found a highly similar structure after having completed his series: a “sphere” comprised of squares and triangles.
