Basel, Galerie Beyeler, 1957, Kat.-Nr. 21 („Prerow (Fluß mit weißer Brücke)“) Im Sommer 1911 reisten Marianne von Werefkin und Alexej von Jawlensky von München nach Prerow auf dem Darß, um dort ein paar Wochen zu malen. In seinen Lebenserinnerungen erwähnt Jawlensky den Aufenthalt ausführlich: „Dieser Sommer bedeutete für mich eine große Entwicklung in meiner Kunst. Ich malte dort meine besten Landschaften und große figurale Arbeiten in sehr starken, glühenden Farben, absolut nicht naturalistisch und stofflich“ (zit. nach: Sommergäste. Von Arp bis Werefkin. Ausst.-Kat., Schwerin 2011, S. 68). Unser Gemälde „Prerow (Darß), Pommern“ zeigt nicht etwa die Ostsee, sondern ihr Hinterland, den Prerowstrom, der die Ostsee bis zu einer schweren Sturmflut 1872 mit dem Bodden verband. Den Vordergrund des Bildes gliedern und zergliedern markante, expressive Farbfelder. Sandstrände und kleine, schmale Wege hat der Künstler nur angedeutet, und ob an der Horizontlinie nun Fischerkaten auftauchen oder die Landschaft, bleibt auch im Ungefähren. Jawlensky präsentiert uns hier die Landschaft als vibrierendes, aufregendes Ereignis, das – wie er in seiner Autobiografie schrieb – aus „innerer Ekstase“ entstand (a.a.O.). Der Vordergrund glüht, der Himmel explodiert. Menschen sind auf diesem Meisterwerk nicht zu erkennen. Lebendig ist es auch ohne sie – durch den Pulsschlag der Pigmente. Basel, Galerie Beyeler, 1957, cat. no. 21 („Prerow (Fluß mit weißer Brücke)“) In the summer of 1911 Marianne von Werefkin and Alexej von Jawlensky travelled from Munich to Prerow/ Darß to paint there for a few weeks. In his memoirs, Jawlensky mentions their stay in detail: “That summer meant for me a great development for my art. There I painted my best landscapes and greatest figural works in powerful, glowing colours, completely unnatural and material. (cited in: Sommergäste. Von Arp bis Werefkin. exh. cat., Schwerin 2011, p. 68). Our painting “Prerow (Darß), Pommern“ does not depict the Baltic Sea but rather its backlands, the Prerower Strom, which linked the Baltic Sea with the Bodden until a severe flooding in 1872. The foreground of the painting is arranged and dissected into striking, expressive colour fields. The artist merely hints at sandy shores and small, narrow pathways, and whether fishermen’s cottages appear on the horizon or rather the landscape will also remain guesswork. Jawlensky presents the landscape to us as a vibrant, exciting event which – as he notes in his autobiography – arose from “inner ecstasy” (loc. cit.). The foreground glows, the sky explodes. People cannot be seen on this masterpiece. Nevertheless, it is alive without them, pulsating through the beat of colour.
