An important AN XII model general's glaive Same typology of Versailles Manufacture. Straight, double-edged, damask blade, ribbed at the centre, double fuller, hollow tip on both sides of the blade, long tang of lenticular section, finely engraved with fasces, cane with snakes, sword, vase and laurel branches on gilded background; the signature "Manufacture de Klingenthal" and "Coulaux Frères" at the base. Fire gilt brass hilt; six-arms quillon, curved the outer ones, of hexagonal section, ending in the shape of dragons heads, straight the central ones, capital-shaped, ending in the shape of feathers, shield-shaped quillon-block with rooster on a side and emu on the other; crown-shaped pommel with leaf-shaped button; longitudinally grooved ebony grip, both sides decorated with gilt brass winged fasces and silver thunderbolts; oak branches at the ring-nut. Re-blued iron scabbard with gilt brass mounts decorated with bas-relieved floral and geometrical motifs, at the centre a rayed eye; wing-shaped, large suspension rings. The glaive was probably manufactured in Kingenthal based on AN VII and AN XII models by Boutet, Art Director of Versailles Manufacture. dating: circa 1800 provenance: France condition report: excellent
