An important, royal piece of furniture donated by Sultan Abdul Hamid II dating: circa 1900 provenance: Turkey The central element shaped as a tower surmounted by lily-shaped crenellations; at the upper part a convex medallion depicting the Ottoman Empire coat of arms, featuring filigree silver and mother of pearl inlays, underneath a gilt chiselling depicting the inside surface of a dome, surmounting a mother of pearl cartouche featuring the first verse of the 48th Sura of the Qur'an Vicory - Indeed, We have given you, [O Muhammad], a clear conquest and the date 1319 (Islamic calendar). At the centre, a large, rectangular door featuring mother of pearl and ivory inlays depicting geometrical motifs surrounded by a frame sculpted with floral motifs, partially gilt; underneath are two drawers, at the base two small pillars featuring filigree chiselling connected by a double arch creating a loggia, the bottom wall with a ivory and mother of pearl rosette. On the sides of the central elements are two minarets, each one surmounted by a dome, with flat tip decorated with pierced and gilt elements; under each dome is a loggia richly decorated and enriched with pierced and chiselled balustrades. In correspondence with the drawers, two square doors featuring the text in coufique géométrique of inlaid mother of pearl and ivory: And [you will obtain] another [favor] that you love - victory from Allah and an imminent conquest; and give good tidings to the believers . At the base of the lateral elements are arches and columns creating a single loggia. The handles, the columns and the domes are decorated with silver filigree inlays; the wooden components of rosewood, partially painted in green. Donated by Sultan Abdul Hamid II to a forefather of the present owner, according to the family tradition. Sultan Abdul Hamid II had a lifelong passion for cabinet-making, he was considered an excellent apprentice when he was young. It is not a surprise that, in his palace in Yildiz, he created a cabinet-making atelier featuring sixty craftsmen. Most of the imperial furniture were built in this place. Other pieces and tools were bought in the Western worls or trough Ottoman producers from Galata, Pera and Nisantas having famous cabinet-makers as Narliyan, Psalty, Hakki Utsa, Mora Biraderler et Refic Bey. From 1877/78 the Sultan featured the writing el-Gazi (Victory) in its tuga, and other personal and imperial symbols. The inscriptions on this cabinet correspond to this habit.
