Antoni Goubau (Antwerp 1616-1698) A market scene in a Mediterranean coastal town, signed and dated lower left: A. Goubau/F. 1673, oil on canvas, 120 x 173 cm, framed Überlanger Text! The present painting is a typical work of Antoni Goubau, who was influenced by Claude Lorrain (1600–1682) and the Bamboccianti and specifically by Jan Miel (circa 1599–1664). He borrowed Claude’s harbours and architectural settings with antique ruins, but he added numerous figures turning the composition into a minutely detailed picturesque scene. Goubau’s figures recall those of Jan Baptist Weenix (1621 – circa 1660) and Johannes Lingelbach (circa 1624–1674). From 1644 to 1649 Goubau lived in Rome, where he got into contact with many other Flemish artists. In 1650 he returned to Antwerp. Nicolas de Largillière (1656–1746) and Jan Frans van Bloemen (1662–1749) were among his pupils.
