Developed in 1962, the figure since then appears frequently in the artist’s oeuvre. Antes' painting combines elements of surrealism and tribal art with the bold colorfulness of Pop art. Inspired by his teacher HAP Grieshaber, the artist turned away from the dominant Informalism in the 1960s. As a co-founder of the New Figuration, he headed over to a new era of German postwar art that coined a new expressivity along with painters like Baselitz, Lüpertz and Hödicke. Condition: The condition of the painting is very good. There are some tiny stains and surface dirt. The frame shows minor signs of use. The dimensions of the painting are 122 x 149.5 cm, while the frame measures 127 x 156.5 cm. Horst Antes (b. 1936) From 1957 to 1959, the German artist Horst Antes studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, where he was a pupil of HAP Grieshaber. From 1965 to 2000, he was a professor for painting at the afore-mentioned Academy. As one of the pioneers of new approaches in representational painting, Horst focuses on the presentation of figures. He developed the ‘Kopffüßler’, a monumental figure in profile consisting of head and feet, which has been determining his work in variations since 1962. Antes is a painter, graphic artist and sculptor. His works have been exhibited internationally and can be found in the collections of major museums, including the Kunsthalle Hamburg, the Sprengel Museum in Hanover and the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
