Arne Jacobsen Unique Cuban mahogany chest of drawers with rounded corners, mounted on rectangular brass plinth. Front with 33 drawers with brass handles. Designed and made 1933 by Rud. Rasmussen Cabinetmakers, with part of maker's paper label. H. 125 cm. W. 120 cm. D. 46 cm. Label # 11931. Provenance: Bernard Schepler, hence by descent in the family. The present chest of drawers was designed specifically for the villa at Vedbæk Strandvej 464 which Arne Jacobsen built for attorney Bernard Schepler in 1933. This assignment was one of the first where the young Arne Jacobsen was in charge of designing both the house and its interior decoration. This unique piece was part of the bedroom interior along with a matching bed frame. Arne Jacobsen designed several furniture pieces and parts of the interior for this Villa which are more or less unknown today. The chest of drawers was exhibited in 2002 at the art museum Louisiana in Humlebæk as a part of the exhibit "Absolut Modern" celebrating Arne Jacobsen's centenary. The exhibit proceeded to show at Deichtor Hallen in Hamburg, Germany in 2003. The piece has not been shown before nor after this occasion. A black and white photo of the chest of drawers can be found at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts' collection of architectural drawings, amongst Arne Jacobsen's various notes.
