François de Bonivard était un patriote religieux, prieur de Saint-Victor, et historien dont l’emprisonnement, de 1530 à 1536 au château de Chillon sur ordre du Duc de Savoie fut la source d’inspiration pour le célèbre poème de Lord Byron, Le prisonnier de Chillon en 1816. Réalisé à la charnière des XIXe et XXe siècles, à l’échelle au 1/100ème,le château de Chillon est un pur chef-d’oeuvre d’art mécanique. Conçu en zinc sablé et cuivre pour les tuiles des toitures, l’artiste a garni les fenêtres de barreaux par lesquelles on peut voir l’intérieur des pièces. La partie mécanique est composée de mouvements d’horlogerie compliqués qui font manoeuvrer une centaine de petits soldats représentant la délivrance de Bonivard et les différentes scènes impressionnantes qui se déroulèrent à cette époque et dans ce lieu. Présenté comme un véritable spectacle, un programme permettait de faire une visite du château dans tous ces détails : ainsi on aperçoit les prisonniers dans les entrailles du château, le célèbre prisonnier enchaîné, la prise du Château avec l’assaut par les troupes bernoises et genevoises avec cent soldats manoeuvrant mécaniquement, l’arrivée des bateaux genevois sur le lac Léman chargés de soldats, l’entrée des soldats dans le Château après avoir enfoncé la porte, la délivrance du prisonnier et enfin le défilé triomphant des troupes au son des anciennes marches avec voix célestes, fifres et tambours. Cet automate était à l’origine présenté avec son chariot afin que son propriétaire puisse transporter aisément l’automate de ville en ville au gré des expositions. Il a été volé dans la cave du Docteur Tassel. Il était encore présent en juin 1983 lorsqu’il fut vendu à l’Hôtel Drouot au Docteur Max Tassel par l’étude Neret-Minet, expert François Theimer, sous le n° 189. État de fonctionnement avec musique. THE CHÂTEAU DE CHILLON M. Wütrich, clock maker in Chestres, swizerland, produced 3 automatons at the end of the 19th century. The first shows two musicians, the second is a large chalet with two or three people cutting wood, drawing water at the fountain, and the third, the most important, represent teh « Château de Chillon ». A Masterpiece The Château de Chillon of great importance and a superb site, has inspired many poets and artist... and has recently inspired an ingenious artist, M . Ed. Wütrich, clock maker in Chestres, whose work is masterpiece. The work in question is a miniature of this historic edifice. It measures 80 cm x 5 cm and is made of zinc shets. Each part of the Chateau is faithfully reproduced : towers of silver tile, drawbridge, chapel, interor gallery, all of exact proportions. Only one modification was brought to the style of the Chateau, lightning rods were established for esthetic and technical reasons. The Chateau is presented for us as it was at the beginning of the 16th century, during the period it received the famous prior of St Victor, the prisonner Bonivard, whom legend has immortalized. This is in 1536 when Bonivard is delivered by the Bernois and Genevois soldiers. The allied troops are represented by appoximatly 100 fine wooden soldiers, artistically sculpted and colored, in front of the Chateau. They are commanded by Bernois captain. Gunners are posted at the two extremities, poised to bombard the Chateau with their mortar. On the lake completely enciercling the edifice, connected to the land by a drawbridge, a large boat contains Genevois soldiers, yellow in color : a cutter has detached it self and arrived up against the drawbridge. A gesture from the Bernois captain starts up the soldiers. One groupe advances toward the drawbridge which lowers to allow them passage . The troops on the square move to the entrance, and one minute has not gone by the door of the Chateau opens a second time, and the drwbridge lowers again, there is an avant-garde of Bernois in red clothing, then Bonivard appears, white beard and brown robe, leaning on a soldier, a military man follows him who carries his chains, another, the haminer which served to with draw the irons from his feet, a third , the longs. The procession advances, rounds the square, the troops at the extremities follow it, on the silent but expressive injunction of the Bernois Captain. Bonivard finally enters the Chateau by another door and the procession regains its first place. During the trip a musical air is heard to a drumm roll. All this is by complicated clock pieces, and well placed. Nothing shocks the eye, nothing appears vugar ; there isn’t a single hitch. If we look at the tower on the side of the lake, we have a view into three rooms. In the first, an execution is shown : a man is hung by two executioners. The second room is the torture rooom, a suspended man is stung with a hot on his legs : in the third romm finally appears Bonivard doing the round of the famous colums. We repeat, this work which cost four and a half years of hard work and thousands of francs to M. Wütrich is a real masterpiece of art an patience. The description we have given shows the art, the artist’s patience explodes before us when we know that the roof is made of ½ square centimeter, tiles of red copper, super imposed one on top of the other, and this part alone took three mounth of work. Yesterday, in admiring, this miniature of the Chillon Château, our only regret was that it was shown at a fair, where people yardly gave it a serious look. This masterpiece is worth so much more, we hope, M. Wütrich will later do a special exhibit, and we predict a well merited grand success.
