Cette comparaison est une métaphore, qui a également été reprise par l’écrivain et critique d’art Amanda Erlanson sur son blogue ‘Erratic Phenomena’. « Je ne peux pas m’empêcher d’imaginer combien ces habitants nocturnes du monde souterrain ont de points communs avec un autre rôdeur de la nuit – le graffeur. Et les rats et les graffeurs sont coriaces, rusés, mal-aimés, des habitants dont on a du mal à se débarrasser, vivant dans ces ‘no-man’s lands’, ces zones désertées, abandonnées, couvertes de détritus, entre la réalité quotidienne et les mécanismes qui les rendent propres et bien éclairées. ». Blek le Rat fut le premier artiste de l’art urbain ou ‘Street Art’ à représenter des rats dans les rues de Paris dans les années 70. Blek Le Rat raconte : « j’ai commencé par faire des petits rats à la bombe dans les rues de Paris parce que les rats sont les seuls animaux à l’état sauvage vivant dans les villes. Seuls les rats survivront, quand la race humaine disparaîtra et mourra, et la peste propagera partout, tout comme l’art urbain.». Il est clair que Banksy avait un penchant pour cette créature du monde souterrain, qu’il a reproduite dans de multiples versions et souvent avec humour, nous fournissant ainsi un commentaire toujours engagé. Banksy décrit d’ailleurs son admiration pour ces petites créatures coriaces, dans son livre intitulé ‘Wall and Piece’ : «Elles existent sans avoir de permission. Elles sont haïes, pourchassées et persécutées. Elles vivent dans un sourd désespoir parmi les détritus. Et pourtant elles sont capables de mettre des civilisations entières à genoux. Si tu es sale, insignifiant et mal-aimé, alors les rats sont l’ultime modèle à suivre. » (Banksy, ‘Wall and Piece’, p 95). This rare hand sprayed unique print shows one of Banksy’s concurrent themes, the Rat, an intelligent and elusive creature whose characteristics are not dissimilar to the clever and mysterious graffiti artist, a metaphoric comparison which was explored further by the writer and art critic, Amanda Erlanson in her blog ‘Erratic Phenomena’; “I can’t help considering how many characteristics these nocturnal residents of the underworld share with another night prowler – the graffiti artist. Both rats and graf writers are tough, clever, unloved and impossible to eliminate denizens of the abandoned, trash- littered no-man’s lands between our everyday reality and the mechanisms that make its clean, well-lit surfaces possible” Blek le Rat was the first street artist to produce rats on the streets in Paris in the 1970’s, stating; “I began to spray some small rats in the streets of Paris because rats are the only wild animals living in cities, and only rats will survive when the human race disappears and dies out and one which spreads the plague everywhere, just like street art” (Blek Le Rat website www.bleklerat.free.fr) Banksy acknowledges Blek’s influence stating “every time I think I’ve painted something slightly original, I find out that Blek Le Rat has done it as well, only twenty years earlier”. Banksy described his admiration of these tough little creatures in his book, ‘Wall and Piece’ ;- “They exist without permission. They are hated, hunted and persecuted. They live in quiet desperation amongst the filth. And yet they are capable of bringing entire civilisations to their knees.
