Bedeutende Renaissance-Platte Majolika, ockerfarbener Scherben, weiß glasiert, polychrom bemalt. Große gemuldete Tellerform auf Standring. Im Spiegel ein weibliches Profilbildnis mit helmartigem Kopfschmuck unter einer Banderole bezeichnet "MARFISA B." Das Gesicht mit blauen Konturen, zartem ockerfarbenem Inkarnat und blauen Haarsträhnen, feine Akzente durch Weißhöhungen. Um die Fahne ein Lorbeerkranz mit Früchten. Gebrochen und restauriert, mit kleinen Ergänzungen, wohl zwischen 1905 und 1939. D 34 cm. Siena oder Urbino, um 1520 - 30. Höchstwahrscheinlich war der bekannteste Vorbesitzer der Platte Alfred Pringsheim. Die im Katalog der Sammlung Pringsheim abgebildete Platte ist nicht ganz identisch mit dem hier gezeigten Exemplar. Wir vermuten, dass die Unterschiede auf eine geöffnete / veränderte Restaurierung zurückzuführen sind. Alfred Pringsheim (Ohlau 1850 - 1941 Zürich) war Mathematikprofessor mit Lehrstuhl an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität und seit 1898 Mitglied der Bayrischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Er stammte aus einer wohlhabenden Kaufmannsfamilie und konnte eine bedeutende Kunstsammlung mit dem Schwerpunkt italienische Majolika und Silber aufbauen. Seine Kenntnisse auf diesem Gebiet waren so umfassend, dass er Mitglied der Ankaufskommission des Bayerischen Nationalmuseums wurde. Er führte ein großbürgerliches Leben, residierte herrschaftlich an der Arcisstr. 12 (heute Katharina von Bora Str. 10), wo sich die Münchner Gesellschaft regelmäßig einfand. Seine Tochter Katharina Hedwig war 1901 die erste weibliche Abiturientin in München und heiratete 1905 den damals schon bekannten jungen Schriftsteller Thomas Mann. 1922 wurde Alfred Pringsheim emeritiert. Zur selben Zeit trafen ihn die Folgen der Inflation und Wirtschaftskrise, so dass er Teile seiner Sammlung verkaufen musste, um zu überleben. Er prägte das Bonmot "Ich lebe von der Wand in den Mund". Obwohl er sich selber als deutscher Patriot sah und als konfessionslos bezeichnete, wurde ihm seine jüdische Herkunft in den darauffolgenden Jahren zum Verhängnis. 1933 wurde sein Haus von der NSDAP zwangsversteigert; er zog in die Widenmayerstr. 35. Die Kunstsammlung wurde auf Betreiben der Nazis 1939 bei Sothebys in London versteigert, mit dem Erlös musste er die Reichsfluchtsteuer bezahlen. Die berühmte, ehemals 435 Teile umfassende Majolikasammlung wurde in alle Winde zerstreut. Die Objekte fanden ein neues Zuhause, auch in bekannten Museumssammlungen wie der des Louvre und des British Museum, in Deutschland z.B. im Badischen Landesmuseum Karlsruhe. Alleine 49 Stücke wurden als Teil der Lehman-Collection in die Sammlung The Metropolitan Museum New York integriert. Das Jüdische Museum München erinnerte mit der Ausstellung „Nichts als Kultur - die Pringsheims“ 2007 an einen der bedeutendsten deutschen Sammler und Mäzene. CXIX) katalogisiert als "Toskana, vielleicht Siena, um 1530". In der Sammlung des Berliner Kunstgewerbemuseums eine Schüssel mit vergleichbarem Motiv, von Tjark Hausmann Nicolò da Urbino zugeschrieben (Hausmann, Majolika, Berlin 1972, Nr. 175). Hausmann listet auch ein umkränztes Exemplar aus dem Museo Civico in Pesaro, bezeichnet "FAUSTINA" und datiert 1522 (ibd. S. 239 f.). Broken and restored with minor additions, probably between 1905 and 1939. D 33.7 cm. Siena or Urbino, ca. 1520 - 30. The platter illustrated in the catalogue of the Pringsheim collection is not identical to the current work. The differences are presumably due to an uncovered/amended restoration. We assume that this plate's most illustrious previous owner was probably Alfred Pringsheim (Ohlau 1850 - 1941 Zurich), a professor of mathematics at the Ludwig-Maximilians University and a member of the Bavarian academy of sciences as of 1898. He was born into a wealthy merchant family, which allowed him to build up an important art collection, focussing on Italian maiolica and silver. He was so knowledgeable in this field that he became a member of the purchasing committee of the Bayrisches Nationalmuseum. He led a comfortable bourgeoisie life, residing sumptuously in Arcisstr. 12 (today Katharina von Bora Str. 10), where he regularly received important guests from Munich high society. In 1901, his daughter Katharina Hedwig became the first female recipient of an “abitur” in Munich, and in 1905 she married the young Thomas Mann, who was already a well-known author. Alfred Pringsheim became a professor in 1922. However, around this time, the effects of hyperinflation and the financial crisis hit him hard, and he was forced to sell off parts of his collection in order to survive. He coined the phrase “living from wall to mouth”. Although he considered himself a German patriot and of no religion, in the following years his Jewish heritage was to lead to his downfall. His house was foreclosed and auctioned by the NSDAP in 1933, and he subsequently moved to Widenmayerstr. 35. His art collection was sold under Nazi instigation at Sotheby's in 1939, and he was forced to use the results to pay the Reich Flight Tax. The famous collection of 435 pieces of maiolica was then scattered throughout the world, with some pieces finding new homes in the collections of famous museums such as the Louvre and the British Museum. Forty-nine pieces were also integrated into the Lehmann Collection in the Metropolitan Museum in New York. The Jewish Museum in Munich paid tribute to this important German collector and patron in the 2007 exhibition “Nichts als Kultur - die Pringsheims“.
