Bedeutende Vase mit der Schlacht von Vitoria Porzellan, farbiger Aufglasurdekor, radierte Vergoldung. Modell "Vase glatt mit glattem gebogenem Henkel am Kessel", zweiteilig gebrannt und verschraubt, zugehöriger Sockel mit Goldranken und vergoldeter Metallplatte oben. Um die mittlere Wandung umlaufend das gemäldeartig gestaltete Panorama des dramatischen Schlachtgeschehens vor gestaffelter Landschaftskulisse. Hals, untere Wandung und Fuß vergoldet, mit radierten Blattdekoren. Die Basis mit außergewöhnlichem schwarzem, rot geädertem Marmorfond. Im Fuß Blaumarke Zepter, roter Unterstrich, brauner Kreis, Pressnummer 38. H 51, D 35 cm, Basis 20,5 cm x 23 cm x 22,8 cm. Mit Basis H 71 cm. Berlin, KPM, um 1817. Diese bis 1994 unbekannte Vase zeigt wie die publizierte gleiche Vase aus dem Geschenk für den Herzog von Wellington in Apsley House auch die Schlacht im baskischen Vitoria. Die zentrale Figur ist der Order gebende Herzog von Wellington auf einem weißen Schimmel, und nicht, wie erwartet, auf einem kastanienbraunen, und auch seine Kleidung ist ungewöhnlich preziös gestaltet. Die Manufaktur kannte eine Aquatintaradierung des Sieges von Vitoria von Frederic Christian Lewis, die allerdings nur das Detail mit dem vom Pferd fallenden Offizier auf der Wandungsrückseite illustriert. Für die genaue Abbildungen der Uniformen gab es zum Zeitpunkt der Produktion dieser Vase noch keine Angaben. Die kamen dann erst als Antwort auf eine Nachfrage von Friedrich Philipp Rosenstiel, dem amtierende Manufakturdirektor, beim dem preußischen Generalfeldmarschall und Kriegsminister Hermann von Boyen im Juli 1818: "Zeichnungen der Uniformen von den unter des Hr. Herzogs Befehlen stehenden Truppen werden mit großer Sehnsucht erwartet." (Baer/Baer, S. 16). Der großen Wellington-Bestellung gingen zahlreiche andere, wenn auch nicht so umfangreiche, persönliche Geschenke an verdienstvolle Briten bzw. den Adel, Mitglieder des "britischen Hofs und Minister", voraus. In den Archivakten der KPM werden der Earl Bathurst, der Marquis of Hertfort, der Viscount und Lady Catlereagh, der Earl of Liverpool, der Marquis Cholmondeley, der Viscount Melville, der Duke of Montrose, der right honorable Vanhittard, Lady Elgin, eine Mrs. Smith, der Lieutenant=General Hammond, ein Doctor Mr. Cooke in Oxford, der Earl Mulgrave, ein Mr. Herris "Commis of the Goverment", aber auch der Herzog von Cumberland, der Erzbischof von Canterbury, ein Herr Harrison und ein Herr Rothschild ausdrücklich genannt. Es wäre vorstellbar, dass abgesehen von dem Herzog von Wellington auch der Generalleutnant Sir Thomas Graham oder der Generalleutnant Sir Rowland Hill beschenkt wurden, möglicherweise sogar genau mit dieser Vase. Diese beiden Generäle wurden zusammen mit dem Herzog von Wellington vom Court of Council of the City of London am 12. Juli 1813 für ihre hervorragende Leistung in der Schlacht von Vitoria geehrt. The neck, lower body, and base of the vase gilded and etched with foliate decor. The base with unusal decoration in imitation of red veined black marble. Like the published vase from the gift of porcelain presented to the Duke of Wellington now kept at Apsley House, this vase, which remained unknown to research until 1994, also depicts the Battle of Vitoria in the Basque country. Central figure in the scene is the Duke of Wellington himself, shown giving orders from the back of a white stallion, and not a brown one as would be expected. His clothing is also unusually opulent. The manufactory was aware of Frederic Christian Lewis' aquatint etching showing the victory at Vitoria, as they include the detail of an officer falling from his horse on the back of the vase. However, at the time the vase was painted, they had no accurate sources for the uniforms worn at the battle. They only received this information in answer to a request from manufactory director Friedrich Philipp Rosenstiel to the Prussian General Field Marshall and war minister Hermann von Boyen in July 1818: “Drawings of the uniforms of the troops under the Duke's command are eagerly awaited” (Baer/Baer, p. 16). The substantial order for the Duke of Wellington was preceded by numerous other personal gifts for deserving British citizens and members of the aristocracy, members of the “British court and ministers”, although none of these were quite as extensive as the order for the Duke. The archives at KPM mention orders for Earl Bathurst, the Marquis of Hertfort, Viscount and Lady Catlereagh, the Earl of Liverpool, Marquis Cholmondeley, Viscount Melville, the Duke of Montrose, the right honorable Vanhittard, Lady Elgin, one Mrs. Smith, Lieutenant=General Hammond, Doctor Mr. Cooke in Oxford, Earl Mulgrave, one Mr. Herris "Commis of the Goverment", but also for the Duke of Cumberland, the Archbishop of Canterbury, one Mr. Harrison and one Mr. Rothschild. It is possible that alongside the Duke of Wellington, General Lieutenant Sir Thomas Graham or General Lieutenant Sir Rowland Hill also received gifts, perhaps even of the same vase. Both of these generals were commended alongside the Duke of Wellington for exceptional service at the Battle of Victoria by the Court of Council of the City of London on 12th July 1813.
