Le manuscrit et la lettre sont écrits sur un feuillet de papier musique à 8 portées. La musique est notée sur une portée et compte 4 mesures, occupant les deux premières lignes de la page, avec le texte inscrit au-dessous des notes. Il s’agit du canon WoO 194 sur les paroles latines : « Si non per Portas per muros per muros per muros ». En fa majeur, à 4/4, ce canon énigmatique compte 4 mesures, destinées à être reprises. Il est dédié à Moritz (Maurice) Schlesinger (1798-1871). Fils de l’éditeur musical berlinois Adolph Martin Schlesinger, qui avait fondé le journal Berliner Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung, le jeune Moritz s’installa à Paris en 1815 pour créer sa propre maison d’édition musicale. Maurice Schlesinger avait séjourné à Vienne en septembre 1825 ; il avait pu assister à la première audition du Quatuor op. 132 de Beethoven, qu’il acheta, en se faisant promettre les droits du quatuor suivant. Il avait également demandé à Beethoven un petit lied (Liedchen) ou un canon pour sa collection personnelle. C’est le présent manuscrit, qui porte en tête l’envoi « An H. M. Schlesinger ». Au-dessous de la musique, Beethoven a écrit cette lettre, datée de Vienne le 26 septembre 1825 : « Ich wünsche Ihnen die schönste Braut mein Werther, u. bey dieser Gelegenheit ersuche ich Sie mich bey H. Marx in Berlin zu empfehlen, daß er es ja nicht zu genau mit mir nehme u. mich zuweilen zur Hinterthür hinaus schlüpfen laße. Der Ihrige Beethoven ». Traduction libre : Je vous souhaite la plus belle fiancée, mon Werther, et je vous demande de profiter de l’occasion pour me recommander à M. Marx à Berlin afin qu’il ne me prenne pas trop au sérieux et me laisse passer de temps en temps par la porte de derrière. Beethoven mentionne ici Adolph Bernhard Marx (1795-1866), rédacteur du Berliner Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung, auteur de Ludwig van Beethoven : Leben und Schaffen (Berlin, 1859), dans lequel il a reproduit en fac-similé (t. 2, Beilagen C) le présent document. The manuscript and the letter are written on a sheet of music paper with 8 staves. The music is notated on one staff and has four bars, occupying the first two lines of the page, with the text written below the notes. It is the canon WoO 194 with the Latin words: "Si non per Portas per muros per muros per muros". In F major, in 4/4 time, this enigmatic canon consists of four bars, intended to be repeated. It is dedicated to Moritz (Maurice) Schlesinger (1798-1871).
