*BOGOMAZOV, ALEKSANDR (1880-1930) Landscape with a Lantern Oil on canvas, 47.5 by 51 cm. Aleksandr Bogomazov's Landscape with a Lantern presented here for auction can confidently be attributed to the Finnish period of this outstanding representative of the Ukrainian avant-garde. In 1911 Bogomazov travelled to Finland where he was impressed by the plasticity and depth of the northern painters, their broad philosophical synthesis and restrained colours. The artist's interest in French Impressionism had waned at this point, and he would return to it again only in 1915-16 when he synthesised what he had absorbed, through the use of bright, almost unrestrained colours, under the influence of German Expressionism. Bogomazov's landscapes of the Finnish period are relatively calm and introspective. Nothing anticipates the madness of his famous Streetcar. But the evident attempt to deconstruct the image before him, by actively breaking it down in the German fashion, reveals Bogomazov as a profound philospher who analyses his material in an unhurried and serious way, and carefully considers each step in his journey, each stroke of his brush. The work dates from a very enigmatic and undervalued period of the artist, then still unrecognised, and is of great value to understand Bogomazov's place in the history of Ukrainian XX century art.
