Le texte, disposé en registres concentriques depuis le bord vers le centre selon une composition centripète, présente des graphèmes évoquant l'araméen ou d'autres écritures sémitiques, sans constituer un texte réellement déchiffrable - il s'agit d'une écriture magique symbolique où l'apparence visuelle de l'écrit prime sur sa lisibilité. Ces bols magiques (incantation bowls ou demon bowls), produits massivement en Mésopotamie et en Perse sassanide entre le IIIe et le VIIIe siècle, constituaient des objets apotropaïques essentiels dans la vie quotidienne des populations juives, chrétiennes, mandéennes et zoroastriennes. Enterrés sous les seuils des maisons, dans les angles des pièces ou sous les sols, souvent disposés à l'envers pour "emprisonner" les entités maléfiques, ils protégeaient les habitations et leurs occupants contre les démons, le mauvais œil, les maladies, les cauchemars et toutes influences néfastes. La disposition spiralée du texte, tournant depuis l'extérieur vers le centre, symbolisait l'enfermement progressif du mal dans le bol, piégé au cœur de la spirale comme dans un vortex magique. Les pseudo-inscriptions - graphismes imitant l'écriture sans constituer un texte lisible - témoignent d'une production destinée à des populations illettrées pour qui l'apparence de l'écrit sacré suffisait à conférer un pouvoir magique, ou d'une volonté délibérée de créer une écriture mystique incompréhensible aux humains mais efficace dans le monde spirituel. Ces objets étaient commandés à des scribes spécialisés ou à des praticiens magiques itinérants qui adaptaient leurs productions - depuis les bols portant de véritables incantations araméennes complexes jusqu'aux pseudo-écritures symboliques - aux moyens financiers et au niveau d'éducation de leur clientèle. Des milliers de ces bols ont été découverts lors de fouilles archéologiques en Irak (Babylone, Nippur, Séleucie-Ctésiphon), en Iran (Suse) et en Syrie, révélant une pratique magique syncrétique mêlant croyances babyloniennes anciennes, judaïsme rabbinique, christianisme oriental et zoroastrisme perse dans le creuset multiculturel de la Mésopotamie sassanide. These magic bowls (incantation bowls or demon bowls), mass-produced in Mesopotamia and Sasanian Persia between the 3rd and 8th centuries, constituted essential apotropaic objects in the daily life of Jewish, Christian, Mandaean, and Zoroastrian populations. Buried under house thresholds, in room corners, or beneath floors, often placed upside down to "imprison" malevolent entities, they protected dwellings and their occupants against demons, the evil eye, diseases, nightmares, and all harmful influences. The spiral arrangement of text, rotating from outside toward center, symbolized the progressive confinement of evil within the bowl, trapped at the heart of the spiral as in a magical vortex. Pseudo-inscriptions—graphisms imitating writing without constituting legible text—testify either to production destined for illiterate populations for whom the appearance of sacred writing sufficed to confer magical power, or to a deliberate intention to create mystical writing incomprehensible to humans but effective in the spiritual world. These objects were commissioned from specialized scribes or itinerant magical practitioners who adapted their productions—from bowls bearing genuine complex Aramaic incantations to symbolic pseudo-writings—to their clientele's financial means and education level. Thousands of these bowls have been discovered during archaeological excavations in Iraq (Babylon, Nippur, Seleucia-Ctesiphon), Iran (Susa), and Syria, revealing a syncretic magical practice blending ancient Babylonian beliefs, rabbinic Judaism, Eastern Christianity, and Persian Zoroastrianism in the multicultural crucible of Sasanian Mesopotamia.
