Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 60,000 Euro The brothers Diego and Alberto Giacometti had started collaborating with the designer Jean-Michel Frank. It was Alberto who had met Frank in 1928 in the Salon des Indépendants. Frank asked Alberto to design him a series of decorative objects for the interior, which he then did. His brother Diego modelled and/or patinated those models. More than 70 models for Frank were produced, including 11 lamps. The design of the lamp is reduced to a minimum of decoration, reflecting the artists’ and designer’s preference for purity. Condition: The lamp is in overall good condition. Few stains as also minor signs of wear feature on the lampshade and on the mounting. The ceiling reflector is partially peeled off. The functioning of the lamp was not tested; it is however presumed – no guarantee. The height of the bronze lampstand is 108 cm, the total height including the lampshade measures 147.4 cm. Diego Giacometti (1902-1985) The first fifty years of Diego Giacometti were characterized by indecisiveness. He found his vocation only in 1925, as he visited his brother Alberto in Paris. Diego first began as a junior helper, yet throughout time he became an indispensable and independent assistant to his brother. The collaboration reached its peak in the 1930s, as the two brothers started working for the designer Jean-Michel Frank exclusively. They chiefly produced furnishing objects, as for instance vases, floor-and desk lamps. The extent of Diego’s creative input for these objects is still unknown. Generally, it is assumed that Alberto had the original ideas and Diego took care of their realization. Nevertheless, it seems that this latter also accomplished few pieces independently. The two brothers pursued this collaboration also in the post-war years, until Diego created theCandleholder with horseheads. In the time after, Diego produced several furniture creations that can be conceptually placed between sculpture and applied art. Furnishings, lamps and small bronze objects were not manufactured as usual furniture, but were modeled and casted like sculptures. Diego’s works are today kept in the Musée des Arts décoratifs in Paris, in the Ciäsa Granda in Stampa und in the Musée Message Biblique Marc Chagall in Nizza.
