Provenance Ancienne collection privée, Suisse Collection privée française, Strasbourg La tête est caractérisée par un visage aux traits émaciés et sérieux envahis par une barbe-moustache et une chevelure épaisses et bouclées. Le haut des cheveux est ceint d’un bandeau noué à l’arrière et délimitant ainsi la position de la base discoïdale où reposait le kalathos du dieu. Le regard porté vers le bas, indique que ce portrait devait originellement être positionné en hauteur, du moins surplombant la hauteur humaine. L’indication des pupilles et de l’iris apporte une intensité au regard de Sérapis. L’ourlet des paupières ainsi que les fines arcades des sourcils dénotent d’une certaine délicatesse. La bouche dont la lèvre supérieure est recouverte par cette moustache épaisse, et elle aussi marquée d’une certaine douceur, de par l’aspect charnel de la lèvre inférieure et le léger espace ouvert. Typique de la barbe de Sérapis, celle-ci se développe sur deux rangs, avec au-dessous quelques blocs de mèches bouclées tombant en pointes. Le drapé classique rappelant la tunique et l’himation grecs recouvrent le buste taillé en herme. La structure à gros grain cristallin blanc du marbre maculé de quelques restes de dépôts (dûs à la conservation de l’oeuvre en extérieur) est à rapprocher de celle des marbres grecs, notamment du marbre de Thassos. La coiffe du dieu manquante, c’est à la base circulaire plate sur le haut de sa tête ainsi qu’aux traits physionomiques que nous pouvons l’identifier comme une représentation du Dieu Sérapis. Le modius devait être conçu dans un matériau autre, plus précieux. Le modèle ici présenté est à rapprocher d’un buste de Sérapis en marbre de l’époque romaine conservé au Musei Vaticani à Rome, n° 245 (fig.1). Le type iconographique le plus ancien de Sérapis remonte communément au simulacre du temple d’Alexandrie, le colossal Sérapéum que la tradition la plus répandue attribue à Ptolémée Ier ou Ptolémée III (Tacite, IV, 81-83). La statue, colossale ets basée sur les canons de la sculpture du IVe siècle. à. C., et donnera suite à une très nombreuse série de répliques et de variantes. La statue était colossale et composée selon une technique qui rappelait celle chryséléphantine et qui dénotait également le style classique de l’auteur : sur un noyau en bois les différentes parties du corps étaient exprimées en métaux vils et nobles, en pierres précieuses et en murs durs de L’Egypte qui brillait de mille feux et peut-être avec des finitions en stuc. Le dieu était représenté assis sur un trône archaïque et reposant ses pieds, chaussés de sandales, sur un tabouret à pattes de lion. Il était vêtu d’un mince chiton et d’un manteau qui pendait sur son épaule gauche ; la tête, richement coiffée, avec cinq boucles retombant sur le front et une barbe divisée en deux sur le menton, était ornée d’un modiuq, symbole de fertilité. De sa main gauche, le dieu tenait le sceptre, tandis que sa main droite reposait sur la tête centrale d’un Cerbère à trois têtes (avec des têtes de loup, de lion et de chien), qui, accroupi à côté du trône The head is characterized by a face with emaciated and serious features invaded by a mustache-beard and thick, curly hair. The downward gaze indicates that this portrait must originally have been positioned high up, at least overlooking human height. The indication of the pupils and the iris brings intensity to Serapis’ gaze. The hem of the eyelids as well as the fine arches of the eyebrows denote a certain delicacy. The mouth, the upper lip of which is covered by this thick mustache, and also marked by a certain softness, due to the carnal appearance of the lower lip and the slight open space. Typical of Serapis’s beard, it develops in two rows, with a few blocks of curly locks falling in points below. The classic drapery reminiscent of the Greek tunic and himation covers the herme-cut bust. The large white crystalline grain structure of the marble stained with some remains of deposits (due to the conservation of the work outdoors) can be compared to that of Greek marbles, notably Thassos marble. The god’s headdress is missing, it is by the flat circular base on the top of his head as well as the physiognomic features that we can identify him as a representation of the God Serapis. The modius had to be made from another, more precious material. The model presented here can be compared to a marble bust of Serapis from the Roman era kept at the Musei Vaticani in Rome, no. 245 (fig.1). The oldest iconographic type of Serapis commonly dates back to the simulacrum of the temple of Alexandria, the colossal Serapeum which the most widespread tradition attributes to Ptolemy I or Ptolemy III (Tacitus, IV, 81-83). The god was represented seated on an archaic throne and resting his feet, clad in sandals, on a lion’s paw stool. He was dressed in a thin chiton and a cloak which hung over his left shoulder; the head, richly coiffed, with five curls falling on the forehead and a beard divided in two on the chin, was decorated with a modio, symbol of fertility. In his left hand the god held the scepter, while his right hand rested on the central head of a three-headed Cerberus (with heads of a wolf, lion and dog), who, crouching next to the throne, the body wrapped in the rings. snake, it underlined, with the livid and bluish color of the naked flesh, the infernal character of the divinity.
