La ville fut occupee par les troupes allemandes, notamment la 116e division Panzer. Les Allies, cherchant a couper les lignes de ravitaillement ennemies, planifierent des bombardements strategiques sur les infrastructures cles, dont les ponts sur l Ourthe traversant Houffalize.
