The present lot from the Circle of Carl Ludwig Hoffmeister offers a wonderful view of part of Vienna‘s inner city with its numerous churches. For example, the Minoritenkirche as well as the towers of the Michaeler and Augustinerkirche are recognisable. On the right edge of the picture, St. Stephen‘s Cathedral rises into the evening sky whilst the baroque Karlskirche appears on the left. In the background the city is surrounded by the hills of the Vienna Woods and on the far right the castle on the Leopoldsberg is visible. This scenery is offered to the viewer from Palais Schwarzenberg, one of the most important Viennese palaces, which is located below the Belvedere. The tree-covered plain visible in the picture was part of the glacis, an open area between Vienna‘s inner city with its city walls and the suburbs. The glacis offered a variety of recreational opportunities and, as can be seen in the present lot, was used for walking and horseback riding, among other things. Today, in the area depicted, there is Schwarzenberg Square with the Red Army Heroes Monument, the High Beam Fountain and magnificent buildings on both sides.
