Außergewöhnlich umfangreiche und prächtig ausgestattete, seltene spanische Pergamenthandschrift mit handgemalten, auch illuminierten Miniaturen und Initialen. „Carta executoria“ von Philipp II. 1527 - 1598, König von Spanien und später auch Philipp I. König von Portugal, herausgegeben 1581 in Granada. Die Handschrift besticht durch ihre sehr farbenprächtigen Malereien und ausgeprägten Goldverzierungen in sehr gutem Zustand. September 1598 El Escorial bei Madrid) Philipp II. erbte als ältester und einzig überlebender legitimer Sohn Karls V. (Karl I. von Spanien) und Isabellas von Portugal das Königreich von Spanien, die amerikanischen Kolonien, die Niederlande, die Freigrafschaft Burgund, das Königreich Sizilien und das Herzogtum Lombardei. 1580 wurde er auch König von Portugal. BESCHREIBUNG Sehr außergewöhnliche und umfangreiche Carta executoria, prächtig ausgestattet mit farbenfrohen Malereien und Goldbeschlag, indes ein Adelspatent für einen Spanier, dem die Zugehörigkeit zum Adel offiziell bestätigt und garantiert wird. Die Miniaturen auf den Eingangsseiten zeigen Mariae Empfängnis und Franziskus (im Rund bzw. im Oval auf Goldgrund, Höhe je ca. 95 mm), eine Kreuzigungsszene, darunter anbetend links den Empfänger der Urkunde mit seinem Namenspatron Petrus, rechts der Hl. Hieronymus (245:150 mm), Jacobus zu Pferde als „Matamoros“ (Maurentöter) und das Familienwappen (je ca. 110:150 mm). Im Text weitere Heiligendarstellungen (jeweils im Oval, auf Goldgrund und in Renaissancekartuschen), die sich auf die in der Urkunde erwähnten Namen beziehen, daher viele Darstellungen von Johannes (Juan) und Petrus (Pedro), jeweils mit unterschiedlichen Attributen, Petrus auch einmal als Petrus Martyr (mit Hackmesser im Kopf). Alle Seiten sind von reichen Renaissancebordüren aus Bandwerk oder Säulen, Blattwerk und Blüten, Masken, Putti sowie phantastischen Menschen- und Tierfiguren umgeben. LAYOUT Schriftspiegel: 22,5 x 13,0 cm. 34-zeilig. Gerundete gotische Buchschrift in schwarzer Tinte. Rot regliert. EINBAND Originaler Ledereinband in braun und mit Goldprägung, sehr gute und robuste Qualität. Die ursprünglichen Beschläge und Schließen fehlen. Zudem wurde der Buchrücken im 18. Jede Textseite mit einer reichen farbigen Bordüre aus Grotesken sowie floralen und architektonischen Elementen. 10 große Initialen in Gold und verschiedenen Farben. 113 einzeilige Initialen in Gold auf blauem Grund. 80 einzeilige Initialen in Gold auf rotem Grund. 13 einzeilige Initialen in rot oder blau auf goldenem Grund. KOLLATIONIERUNG Blatt 124 ist ein nicht nummeriertes Blatt und die letzen 3 Blätter sind nur mit Bordüre und Linien. Das Schlussblatt ist auf den Innendeckel montiert. Das Werk ist vermutlich komplett. ZUSTAND In altersgemäß sehr gutem Zustand. PERGAMENT Sehr festes Pergament in guter Qualität mit leichten Gebrauchsspuren, d.h. mit Bereibungen, Verwischungen und leicht fleckig. Die Bordüren wurden beim Binden zu einem großen Teil leicht beschnitten. DESCRIPTION Very exceptional and comprehensive Carta executoria, magnificently decorated with brightly coloured illuminations, and gilded. The miniatures on the first pages show the Immaculate Conception and Saint Francis (in a tondo and oval format on gold background, height each ca. 95 mm), a Crucifixion scene with the recipient of this charter and his patron Saint Peter kneeling below on the left. Kneeling on the right are Saint Jerome (245:150 mm), Saint James on horseback as “Matamoros” (the Moor-slayer) and the family coat of arms (each ca. 110:150 mm). The text comprises further depictions of saints (each in oval format, on gold ground and in Renaissance cartouches). They relate to the names mentioned in the charter, hence many depictions of Saint John (Juan) and Saint Peter (Pedro), respectively with various attributes; in one, Saint Peter is depicted as a martyr (with a chopping knife in his head). All pages are decorated with sumptuous Renaissance borders featuring strapwork or pillars, foliage and blossoms, masks and putti, and surrounded by mythical human and animal figures. LAYOUT Type area: 22.5 x 13.0 cm. 34 lines. Rounded Gothic typeface in black ink. Ruled in red. BINDING Original brown leather binding with gold embossing in very good and solid quality. The original clasps and hardware lost. Furthermore, the binding was renewed during the 18th century. SIZE OF THE FOLIO BOOK Ca. H: 33 cm x W: 22 cm x D: 5 cm. WEIGHT 2.09 kg BOOK ILLUSTRATIONS Three decorative pages in coloured gouache and gold, thereon four approx. half-page depictions and one full-page miniature painting (ca. H: 24 x W: 14 cm). There are 25 small miniature paintings (ca. H: 11 x W: 8.5 cm) in gold and different colours within the text. Every text page decorated with a richly colourful border comprising grotesques, floral and architectural elements. Ten large initials in gold and different colours. There are 113 single-line initials in gold on blue ground; 80 single-line initials in gold on red ground; and 13 single-line initials in red or blue on gold ground. COLLATION Page 124 is not numbered and the last three pages only show a border and lines. The final page is mounted on the inside board of the book. The work is probably complete. CONDITION In very good, age-consistent condition. VELLUM Very firm vellum in good quality with minor signs of usage, i.e. wear, smearing and slightly stained. The borders were largely cut in the process of binding the book.
