Provenienz: Über Erbfolgeaus alter Dresdener Privatsammlung, jetzt Privatsammlung Rheinland. Gutachten: Prof. Dr. Helmut Börsch-Supan, Berlin, vom 23.3.2014. Prof. Dr. Börsch-Supan hat das Gemälde im Original begutachtet und schreibt: "...(Es) kann aufgrund der Provenienz, des Motivs und des malerischen Vortrags kein Zweifel an der Autorschaft von Carus Bestehen. [...] Man mag bei dem Bild an eine Stelle bei Carus' 'Lebenserinnerungen und Denkwürdigkeiten' (Hrsg von Elmar Jansen, Weimar 1966, S.120) denken, wo er unter dem Jahr 1844 nach der Englandreise notiert: '... und so lag ich denn am ersten Abenddort wieder im Fenster, sah hinaus in die stille Nacht über die den Sternenschimmer wiederspiegelnde Elbe und kühlte mich an den milden, von der Insel herüberwehenden Lufthauche... Wie ich heute abend so hinaussah auf den Strom, der still und unausgesetzt seine Wellen durch Wiesen und Weiden daherbringt, fühlte ich mich so eigentümlich ruhig, klar, der Welt im ganzen vermählt und vom einzelnen der Erscheinung so frei und unabhängig'". Prof. Dr. Börsch-Supan examined the painting in the original and writes: "Thanks to the provenance, the motif and the painterly application there is no doubt concerning the authorship of Carus. [...] The painting may remind of a part in Carus' 'Lebenserinnerungen und Denkwürdigkeiten' (Hrsg von Elmar Jansen, Weimar 1966, S.120), in which he writes concerning the year 1844 after his journey to England: '...so on the first evening I lay again in the window, looking out into the quiet night over the Elbe reflecting the glimmer of the stars and was refreshed by the gentle breeze blowing over from the island...Tonight as I watched the stream, which calmly and constantly carries its waves through meadows and pastures, I felt oddly calm, clear, fused with the whole world and so free and independent from the whole of the appearance."
