Provenienz Marian Goodman Gallery, New York In einem Interview äußerte Boltanski auf die Frage: „Sie haben vorhin gesagt, daß Sie Ihre Arbeit so haben wollen wie eine Kerze, die im nächsten Moment erlöschen kann. Treiben Sie diesen Reiz mit Ihren Schattenbildern auf die Spitze?“ „Mit den „Schatten“ verbinde ich viel. Zunächst erinnern sie an Tote, man spricht vom Schattenreich. Dann aber gibt es auch eine unmittelbare Beziehung zur Photographie; auf griechisch bedeutet das, mit Licht schreiben, ein Schatten ist also eine primäre Photographie. Der Schatten ist aber auch trügerisch, man sagt, „man hält einen Schatten für die Beute“, der Schatten ist ein Trick, er ist eben genau jene kleine Papierfigur, die wie ein großer Löwe erscheint; [...] In diesem Sinn interessiert mich der Schatten, denn das ist Theater, in seinem künstlichsten Sinn. Ich wollte mit den Schatten eine Art Totentanz machen, allerdings eine nette Form von Theater, eine nette Form von Totentanz. Die kleinen Figuren, die ich gebastelt habe, sind oft Skelette, aber das sind niedliche, kleine Skelette; es ist eben auch ein Totentanz für Kinder. Dann mag ich an den Schatten das Ephemere; von einem Augenblick zum anderen können die Schatten verschwinden, sobald die Scheinwerfer oder die Kerzen verlöschen, ist nichts mehr da. Provenance Marian Goodman Gallery, New York In an interview, Boltanski was asked the following question: 'You have previously said that you wish your work to be like a candle which can be extinguished at any moment. Are you pushing this to aim far with your shadow pictures?' 'I connect a lot to the 'shadows'. Initially it reminds one of the dead, one talks of the realm of shades. It also however lends a direct connection to photography; in Greek this means to write with light. A shadow is therefore a primary photograph. Shadow is also deceptive; as we say, 'one hides the prize under the shadow'. The shadow is a trick, just like the small paper figure, which appears as a great lion; [...] shadows interest me in this way, because they are theatre, in its artistic sense. I wanted to make a kind of dance of death with the shadows. The small figures I made are often skeletons, but cute, small skeletons; it is also a dance of death for children. I then like the ephemerality of shadow; the shadows can disappear in a moment. As soon as the light or candles fade, there is nothing left. The shadow is fragile, it is not tangible'.
