George Condo ist einer der erfolgreichsten und interessantesten amerikanischen Künstler. In jungen Jahren arbeitet er in Warhols Factory und ist befreundet mit den Malern Jean-Michel Basquiat und Keith Haring. Auch ist er mit den Schriftstellern Brion Gysin, William S. Burroughs und Félix Guattari bekannt. In den 1980er und Anfang der 1990er-Jahre lebt Condo in New York und Paris und für kurze Zeit sogar in Köln, wo er mit Künstlern der Mülheimer Freiheit wie z.B. Walter Dahn oder Jiri Georg Dokoupil arbeitet. Condos groteske und humorvolle Bildwelten zeigen überzeichnete Figuren, Hybride aus altmeisterlichen Vorbildern mit comichaften wie popkulturellen Elementen. In diesem Sinne benennt er seinen Stil selbst als "artifiziellen Realismus". Da er mehrere Seiten eines Charakters der Dargestellten auf die Leinwand bannen möchte - ganz ähnlich wie Picasso in seiner kubistischen Phase - bezeichnet er seinen Stil auch als "psychologischen Kubismus". Neben Pablo Picasso finden sich Einflüsse von Willem de Kooning und Francis Bacon in seinen Werken. Condo selbst inspiriert namhafte Künstler der nachfolgenden Generation wie John Currin oder Glenn Brown. In der vorgestellten Arbeit "Screaming Couple" wird der Betrachter Zeuge des Geschlechtsaktes zwischen einem Mann und einer Frau auf einem ins Abstrakte abgleitenden Sessel oder bettartigen Gebilde vor blauem Hintergrund. Zu diesem Blau sticht das rosé-orangefarbene Inkarnat der fast nackten Leiber als Komplementärkontrast besonders hervor. Akzente werden durch das Rot gesetzt. Unser voyeuristisches Ich wird einerseits durch das Beobachten des intimen Aktes in das Bildgeschehen hineingezogen. Andererseits scheinen uns die Protagonisten auf genau diesen Umstand aufmerksam zu machen und uns wieder zu vergrämen: Kopf und Oberkörper der Frau sind zu uns gedreht. Ihr Gesicht ist, ebenso wie das ihres Partners, verzerrt und überzeichnet. Mit weit aufgerissenem Mund hält sie dem Blick des Betrachters wie ein Raubtier stand und scheint diesen anfallen zu wollen. Der Mann "fletscht" ebenfalls seine Zähne und schaut uns an. Wir betrachten das Paar, doch das Paar blickt auch auf uns - selbst die Brüste der Frau erscheinen wie zwei Augen, die uns anstarren. Gekonnt lässt der Künstler die Blickachsen hin und her wandern. Darüber hinaus vereint er die Harmonie der Farben mit der Dynamik der Gesten und Bildlinien. Condo's grotesque and humorous pictorial worlds show overdrawn figures, hybrids of old master models with comic-like and pop-cultural elements. The pink and orange incarnate parts of the almost naked bodies stand out as a complementary contrast to this blue. Accents are set by the red. Our voyeuristic ego is drawn into the picture on the one hand by observing the intimate act. On the other hand, the protagonists seem to draw our attention to this very circumstance and make us feel uneasy again. The woman's head and upper body are turned toward us. Her face, like that of her partner, is distorted and exaggerated. With her mouth wide open, she stands up to the viewer's gaze like a predator and seems to want to attack. The man also "grinds" his teeth and looks at us. We look at the couple, but the couple also looks at us - even the woman's breasts appear like two eyes staring at us. The artist skillfully lets the axes of vision wander back and forth. In addition, he combines the harmony of the colours with the dynamics of the gestures and picture lines.
