Das uns vorliegende farbenfrohe Stillleben des russischen Malers Constantin Ivanovitch Gorbatoff ist ein beeindruckendes Beispiel der anziehenden Eigenschaft des russischen Impressionismus: seiner besonderen Emotionalität. Die Vorzeichnung, die Gorbatoff auch bei unserem Werk absolut furchtlos mit einem verhältnismäßig breiten Pinselstrich und blauer Farbe vornimmt, stellt ein Charakteristikum seiner stilistischen Arbeitsweise dar. Vor den lichtbeschienenen Häuserwänden der italienischen Küstenstadtkulisse inszeniert Gorbatoff ein farbintensives Stillleben. Neben seinen geliebten Geranien, positioniert er reife, saftige Früchte im Halbschatten des Balkons auf einem Tisch mit Leinentuch. Es existieren nur wenige Stillleben Gorbatoffs, weshalb wir uns umso weniger an diesem Sehnsuchtsbild Gorbatoffs sattsehen können. Es spiegelt den unglaublichen kreativen Aufschwung wider, den Gorbatoff bei jedem Besuch auf Capri erlebt, bis es ihn 1922 für ein paar Jahre dauerhaft auf die Insel zieht. 1926 verlässt er die Insel jedoch wieder, um in Berlin zu leben. Das für ihn „ideal ästhetische Umfeld“ Capris ändert seine Farbpalette jedoch nachhaltig - sie wird fortan intensiver und lebendiger. Auch in der Ferne nährt sich Gorbatoffs Kunst von den Jahren auf der Sonneninsel. Unser Gemälde, welches möglicherweise erst in den späten 1920er oder frühen 1930er Jahren zurück in Berlin entstanden sein muss, ist ein Sehnsuchtsbild nach der Freiheit, nach einem Land außerhalb politischer Grenzen. Das Gemälde wurde verso auf dem Keilrahmen, wohl vom Künstler selbst, mit Bleistift bezeichnet: „Capri - Häuser im Gegenlicht“ (kyrillisch). Auf dem Keilrahmen befindet sich verso zudem ein beschädigtes Etikett: „[…]uer, Berlin […]79 Kunst-Abteilung“. Vermutlich wurde das Gemälde von der Berliner Spedition Gustav Knauer transportiert. Etiketten dieser Speditionsfirma befinden sich auf vielen Werken Gorbatoffs. Frau Dr. Olga Sugrobova-Roth bestätigte die Authentizität des Bildes anhand des Originals. Die Arbeit ist in die Datenbank ihres in Vorbereitung befindlichen Werkverzeichnisses aufgenommen worden. This colourful still life by the Russian painter Constantin Ivanovitch Gorbatoff is an impressive example of the unique emotive appeal of Russian Impressionism. Gorbatoff has carried out the initial sketch with bold blue lines in broad brushstrokes, a method characteristic of his manner of working. The artist presents a vividly coloured still life against the brightly lit facades of the Italian coastal setting. Alongside his beloved geraniums he places ripe, juicy fruit, half overshadowed by the balcony above, on a linen tablecloth. Very few still lifes by Gorbatoff exist, which makes it yet more difficult to tear ones eyes away from this idyllic image. It reflects the incredible creative upsurge that Gorbatoff experienced with each trip to Capri which he took before he settling on the island for several years in 1922. He left for Berlin in 1926, but the “ideal aesthetic surroundings” of Capri changed his colour palette forever, making it more vivid and lively. Even far away from Italy, Gorbatoff's years on the sunny island were a constant source of inspiration for him. The present work, which was probably painted in the late 20s or early 30s when Gorbatoff was back in Berlin, probably represents a vision of longing for a land without political borders. The painting is inscribed in cyrillic to the back of the stretcher, probably by the artist himself: “Capri – Backlit Houses”. The stretcher also bears a partially damaged label that reads “[...]uer, Berlin [...]79 Kunst-Abteilung“, which indicates that it was probably transported by the Berlin shipping company Gustav Knauer, whose labels can be found on many of Gorbatoff's works.
