Accesories: Certificate of Authenticity and a signed book Cyril Phan, known as Cyril Kongo, was born in Toulouse in 1969, from a Vietnamese father and a French mother. He grew up between Vietnam, Congo - hence his artist name - and France. From this diversity of cultures, he draws a heterogeneous, raw and colorful art as a meeting point of all the worlds he has known. In 1986, he began to put his mark in Paris, then joined the Parisian collective MAC in 1987 or 1988 (acronym of “Mort Aux Cons” then “Mural Art Creation”). Very quickly he turned to the creation of monumental frescoes that earned him recognition on the entire international scene. In 2002, he and his group Kosmopolite launched the first international graffiti festival in France in partnership with the city of Bagnolet. Faced with his growing fame, luxury houses called on him, including Hermès, Daum and Richard Mille (the RM 68-01 movement is entirely tagged by the artist). Each of his artworks is a riot of colour, hence his nickname “Mister Colorful”. Street artist, graffiti artist, tagger so many names possible to represent this contemporary urban artist. He rejects all the labels and identifies himself only as an artist. He chose to seize the present moment, to translate the ephemeral, may be a consequence of the uprooting of his childhood - he arrived in France as a political refugee. The work we present is in the image of its creator: free, shimmering and a dialogue between two civilizations. Cyril Phan, dit Cyril Kongo est né à Toulouse en 1969, d’un père vietnamien et d’une mère française. Il grandit entre le Vietnam, le Congo – d’où son nom d’artiste – et la France. De cette diversité de cultures, il puise un art hétéroclite, brut et coloré à la rencontre de tous les mondes qu’il a connus. En 1986, il commence à poser sa marque à Paris, puis rejoint en 1987 ou 1988 le collectif parisien MAC (acronyme de « Mort Aux Cons » puis de « Mural Art Création »). Très rapidement il s’oriente vers la création de fresques monumentales qui lui ont valu une reconnaissance sur l’ensemble de la scène internationale. En 2002, il lance, avec son collectif Kosmopolite, le premier festival international de graffiti en France en partenariat avec la ville de Bagnolet. Face à sa renommée grandissante, des maisons de luxe font appel à lui dont Hermès, Daum et Richard Mille (le mouvement de la RM 68-01 est entièrement tagué par l’artiste). Chacune de ses œuvres est une débauche de couleur d’où son surnom « Mister Colorful ». Street artist, graffeur, taggeur autant de dénominations possibles pour ce grand représentant de l’art urbain contemporain. Lui-même rejette toutes ces étiquettes et s’identifie uniquement comme un artiste. Il choisit de saisir le moment présent, de traduire l’éphémère, sans doute une conséquence des déracinements de son enfance – il arrive en France en tant que réfugié politique.
