Als Hofmaler des spanischen Statthalters der Niederlande, dem aus dem Hause Habsburg stammenden Erzherzog Leopold Wilhelm, kopierte David Teniers an dessen Brüsseler Hof ausgewählte Werke aus dessen herausragender Sammlung italienischer Meister. Diese sogenannten Pasticci entstanden Mitte der 1650er Jahre und dienten Stechern als Vorlage für die Anfertigung von Kupferstichen in gleicher Größe. Nachdem alle Stiche hergestellt waren, publizierte David Teniers 1660 sein berühmtes „Theatrum Pictorum“, in dem über 240 Gemälde der erzherzoglichen Sammlung illustriert sind. In diesem Zusammenhang entstand auch unser Gemälde nach Jacopo Bassano, das von I. Troyon für das Theatrum Pictorum gestochen wurde (1. Edition, Brüssel 1660, 2. nummerierte Edition Antwerpen 1684, Ill. 164). Margret Klinge schreibt hierzu in ihrem Gutachten: „Da die Originale von Bassano aus der Sammlung von Leopold Wilhelm verloren sind, kommt diesem herrlichen Pasticcio von David Teniers d. In his role as court painter to Spanish Stadtholder of the Netherlands Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of the house of Habsburg, David Teniers was able to copy selected works from the Archduke's collection of Italian masters at his court in Brussels. These so called “Pasticci” were made throughout the mid-1650s and were turned into engravings with the same dimensions. After all of the engravings were completed, Teniers published them in his famous “Theatrum Pictorum” in 1660, in which over 240 pictures from the ducal collection were illustrated. The present work after Jacopo Bassano was painted as part of this series and engraved for the “Theatrum Pictorum” by I. Troyon (1st edition, Brussels 1660, 2nd numbered edition Antwerp 1684, ill. 164). Margaret Klinge writes in her expertise “This wonderful Pasticcio by David Teniers the Younger acquires special historical significance due to the fact that the Bassano originals from the collection of Leopold Wilhelm are now lost.”
