Ab 1892 Besuch der Abendkurse der Städtischen Zeichenschule in Le Havre unter der Leitung von Charles Lhuillier, wo er Georges Braque und Othon Friesz kennenlernte. Bis 1898 malte Dufy Porträts und Landschafts-Aquarelle nach der Natur im Stil von Eugène Boudin und Camille Pissarro. Mit einem Stipendium der Stadt Le Havre ging er nach Paris, wo er sich an der EcBA bei Léon Bonnat einschrieb, dessen akademische Malweise ihn rasch langweilte. Richtungweisende Impulse für das Frühwerk erhielt Dufy durch regelmäßige Besuche der Galerien Ambroise Vollard, Durand-Ruel, Eugène Blot und Bernheim Jeune, die sich für den Impressionismus und Nachimpressionismus engagierten. Neben diesen Einflüssen wurden 1905 (Salon d'Automne) das Bild Luxe, calme et volupté (1904, Paris, MAMVP) von Henri Matisse und dessen farbige Malweise zu einem Schlüsselerlebnis. Dufy's erste unmodellierte, aus reinen Farben aufgebaute Bilder entstanden auf Reisen nach Fécamp, Sainte-Adresse, Trouville und Le Havre sowie während eines Aufenthalts mit Friesz in Falaise. (AKL) Aus dieser frühen Schaffensphase, in der Farbe zum wichtigsten Mittel des noch experimentierenden Künstlers zählt, stammt auch das hier vorgestellte Gemälde. In lockerem Duktus setzt Dufy unterschiedlichste Grüntöne nebeneinander und offenbart dem Betrachter ein wunderbar flackerndes Spiel aus Licht und Schatten. Since 1892 he attended evening seminars at the urban drawing school in Le Havre conducted by Charles Lhuillier. Here he met Georges Braque and Othon Friesz. Until 1898 Dufy painted portraits and landscape watercolours based on nature, in the style of Eugène Boudin and Camille Pissarro. He moved to Paris on a scholarship granted by Le Havre and enrolled at the EcBA under Léon Bonnat, whose academic style of painting he was soon wearied of. His early work was strongly inspired by regular visits to galleries, run by Ambroise Vollard, Durand-Ruel, Eugène Blot, and Bernheim Jeune. They were committed to impressionism and post-impressionism. Among these influences the Henry Matisse painting Luxe, calm et volupté (1904, Paris, MAMVP) and its colouring became crucial in 1905 (Salon d'Automne). Dufy's first paintings free of object-oriented modelling and composed of pure colours were created while travelling to Fécamp, Sainte-Adresse, Trouville, and Le Havre. As well as during the stay in Falaise together with Friesz. And while he was still interested in trying out new ways of painting. The different green shades Dufy arranged next to one another and applied in loose ductus, reveal an amazing flickering interplay between light and shadow to the beholder.
