Le thème du serpent est omniprésent chez Edgar Brandt. En effet, celui-ci créa plusieurs modèles d'objets utilisant cet animal, comme des chenets, des lampes et des lampadaires. Ce lampadaire présenté est à la fois magnifique et déroutant. Magnifique, par le rendu presque naturaliste du reptile, aussi bien dans la représentation des écailles, le réalisme de l'attitude, que dans cette sinuosité parfaitement restituée du serpent qui enlace. Et déroutant, dans sa dimension mythologique. En effet, les mythes antiques associent le serpent au monde souterrain , au monde d'Hadès, et donc à l'obscurité. Or, ici, Brandt fait de lui la source d'une lumière éclairant le monde. Ce détournement mythologique illustre bien l'originalité de cet exceptionnel ferronnier. The theme of the snake is omnipresent with Edgar Brandt and he created many objects using this animal, such as firedogs, lamps and standard lamps. The standard lamp presented with the number 38 is both magnificent and disconcerting. Magnific because of the nearly naturalistic rendering of the reptile, the lifelike interpretation of it's scales and the realistic attitude of a winding, enlacing snake; and disconcerting by it's mythological dimension. It's true that the ancient myths often associated the snake with the underworld, the world of Hadès and so of darkness. However, this time Brandt changed him into source of light illuminating the world. This way of rerouting mythology shows so clearly the originality of this exceptional craftsman wrought iron.
