Lot 82
EMPIRE, GOLD AUREUS OF MARCIANA, Rome, ca. 113 AD, 7.321g, 6h. Calicó 1152b (this coin). Very rare. Old cabinet tone. With a superb portrait in the finest style of the period. Good very fine. Ars Classica 1933 (16) lot 1658
There is very little is in the historical record of Marciana, Trajan's sister. Unlike many other imperial relatives during the Empire, she is presented as a modest matron, living in harmony, seeking to exercise no influence on politics, and apparently made no notable financial benefactions, nor enjoyed the prominence of Livia and some of the other Julio-Claudian princesses. Her posthumous coinage represents a numismatic novelty, the use of Consecratio appearing here for the first time.
