English Notes Léopold SURVAGE 1879-1968 PAYSAGE A LA PORTEUSE, 1926 Following a one-man show at the Gallery Granoff from March 14 to 31, 1927, where 36 works by Léopold Survage were exhibited - and perhaps even this one - Tériade wrote in the Feuilles volantes of the Cahiers d'art (1927, n° 2): “Survage's experiments have born fruit today in a very convincing way. What the painter has sought for some time in architectural abstractions of planes synthesizing space, seeking the power to evoke space in painting, has now been calmly achieved after a long period of research. […] These rigorous disciplines, sometimes lightened by the painter with a touch of poetry, but on the whole somewhat monotonous in their nudity, have been replaced by authentic life, a shy but definite presence, in his recent works - water-carriers evoking the women of the Mediterranean, statues, fishermen, and peasants. Also birds, birds enlarged by an azure sky and whose widespread wings energize the peaceful quiet of the landscapes. A leaf here and there in full volume with its texture and shimmering colors, green like rare freshness, take up the foreground in the painter's compositions. A rich palette of ochres with some blues, greens, and blacks, is enough for Survage to convey to us a colored transposition of the southern climate.” Paysage à la porteuse belongs to the series described by Tériade. In 1926, Survage had attained a level of achievement that enabled him to bring together man, the mineral and vegetable, by combining Cubist architecture with his own lyrical style.
