Ezra POUND. 5 L.A.S. et 32 lettres dactylographiées, 1949-1959, à Raymond Hughes à Cardiff (South Wales) ; 7 pages (3 au crayon), et 46 pages dactylographiées, formats divers, plusieurs adresses ou enveloppes ; en anglais. Intéressante correspondance inédite, principalement pendant son internement à l’hôpital psychiatrique de Saint-Elizabeth à Washington. [Pound était interné depuis novembre 1945, après avoir été jugé irresponsable des actes de haute trahison dont il était inculpé. Raymond Davies HUGHES (1923-1999), pilote britannique de la RAF devenu prisonnier des Allemands, fit à partir de 1943 des émissions de propagande nazie en gallois à l’intention de ses compatriotes, notamment les soldats se battant en Italie ; condamné après la guerre à une peine de travaux forcés, il s’établit ensuite à Cardiff. Pound le nomme « Radiant Hughes ». Pour la plupart dactylographiées par Pound lui-même (avec quelques rares ajouts autographes), dans un idiome familier et à l’orthographe parfois phonétique, ces lettres témoignent de la vivacité de Pound, et d’opinions souvent caustiques sur ses contemporains. Les L.A.S. sont signées d’initiales ; quelques lettres dactylographiées portent un post-scriptum autographe (parfois signé) de la femme de Pound, née Dorothy Shakespear (qui a également écrit les adresses ou enveloppes). 4 lettres sont adressées au Révérend Henry Swabey, au presbytère de Laidsell (Chelmsford, Essex), pour être remises à Hughes. Les lettres ont été datées, et parfois annotées, par Hughes.] Parmi les nombreux sujets abordés : ses Cantos et poèmes et une nouvelle édition de son livre The ABC of Economics, la langue anglaise, les Américains, la revue Four Pages (« 4P »), les économistes, les artistes et les bureaucrates, les dotations universitaires (entre les mains de castrats mentaux), l’emploi et le chômage, une revue littéraire qu’il souhaite strictement contemporaine, etc. On rencontre les noms d’écrivains britanniques ou irlandais, tels que Basil Bunting, T.S. Squire ; d’universitaires, tels que Frank Aydelotte (ancien administrateur de l’Institute of Advanced Studies de Princeton, et membre de l’Anglo-American Committee of Enquiry regarding the problems of European Jewry and Palestine), Nicolas Butler (qui fut aussi homme politique et Prix Nobel de la Paix), Mark Van Doren (préfacier d’une édition de ses lettres) ; d’économistes, tels que Montgomery Butchart, C.H. Paige, 1951, avec copie d’échanges de lettres avec Hemingway et T.S. Eliot concernant une initiative de Gabriela Mistral pour faire libérer Pound. Plus un exemplaire bilingue de la pétition au Président et au peuple des États-Unis d’Amérique, que Mistral souhaitait faire signer par tous les lauréats du Prix Nobel.
