J'ai été tout de suite emballé par la trajectoire de leurs corps brunis dans le soleil et puis dans l'eau. Un mouvement fluide, épatant. Ces plongeurs, ça a déclenché tout le reste, les acrobates, les cyclistes, les musiciens, je suis devenu plus souple, moins raide”. 1 L'œuvre que nous présentons ici, datée de 1943, donne à voir des figures puissantes et équilibrées à la fois. Les personnages aux volumes simplifiés semblent mécaniques et en mouvement permanent. Le corps humain, traité à l'égal d'un objet, sans être individualisé, est malgré tout valorisé. La structure géométrique du visage est en forme de disque ou d'ovale et les traits du visage sont réduits à leur plus simple expression. Parallèlement, toute trace d'humanité ou d'émotivité est effacée. Si l'on considère que Léger puise son inspiration dans son quotidien, on pense tout de suite, en voyant les couleurs changeantes, du rouge au jaune puis du jaune au bleu qui donnent un dynamisme à l'ensemble, aux projecteurs publicitaires lumineux qu'il découvre sur Broadway. “Je pars aux Etats-Unis et je vais un jour à la piscine. Les plongeurs, n'étaient plus cinq ou six, mais deux cents. Allez-vous y reconnaître ! A qui la tête ? A qui la jambe ? A qui les bras ? Je ne savais plus. Alors j'ai représenté des membres dispersés dans mon tableau. En faisant cela, il m'a semblé être beaucoup plus proche de la réalité que Michel-Ange étudiant en détail les muscles de chaque membre.” Fernand Léger a réalisé plusieurs dessins et peintures sur ce thème : Les Plongeurs 1941-42, 228,6 x 172,8 cm, (Museum of Modern Art, New York). Les Plongeurs noirs, 186 x 221 cm (MNAM, Paris). Les Plongeurs sur fond jaune 190 x 219 cm (The Art Institute of Chicago). Les Plongeurs polychromes (1942-46) sans doute sont-ils les plus dynamiques de la série. 2 It was in Marseille in 1940 that Léger dreamt first the first time about painting this scene of divers that he would work further on and develop in New York. “Some young dockers were bathing in the harbor. I was immediately thrilled by the trajectory of their tanned bodies in the sun and then in the water, a smooth and splendid movement. These divers, they triggered everything else: the acrobats, the cyclists, the musicians. I have become more flexible, less rigid.”1 The work presented here, dating from 1943, brings to light figures both powerful and balanced. The characters portrayed with simplified volumes seem to be mechanized and show movement. The human body is treated as equal to an object, without individual feeling but magnificent in its depiction. The geometrical framework of the face is shaped as a disk or oval, the features of the face are completely reduced to their simplest expression that at the same time deprives the protagonists from any humanity or emotionalism. If one considers that Léger drew his inspiration from his day-to-day life, one can only think of the luminous advertising billboards he discovered on Broadway Avenue, their colors changing from red to yellow then from yellow to blue, which provided the whole painting with a certain dynamism. “I went to the United-States and one day visited a swimming pool. There were no longer just five or six divers, but two hundred all at the same time. Try to imagine that! Whose head is whose? Whose leg is whose? Whose arm is whose? I couldn't tell. And so, I drew those limbs all over my painting. By doing so, I think I was much closer to the truth than Michelangelo when he studied in detail the muscles of every limb.” 2 Fernand Léger produced many drawings and paintings on the subject: The Divers (1941-42, 142 x 107.4 in., Museum of Modern Art, New York), Black Divers (115.6 x 137.3 in., MNAM, Paris), Divers on a Yellow Background (118 x 136 in., the Art institute of Chicago) and Polychrome Divers (1942-46).
