Giuliano Briganti, “De Pisis, Catalogo Generale. Tomo primo, Opere 1908–1938”, Electa Milan 1991, p. 431, no. 1938_27, with ill. DE PISIS The technique, that is, De Pisis’s means of expression, is more or less the familiar one: light touches and deep marks (where the colour darkens); an elusive but firm drawing, an aerial, soaring, windborne line. Such are the means from which the subject is woven – impalpable, transparent, glasslike in itself. Everything is clear, crazed with light. In order to make a comparison, we must seek recourse to Tintoretto – San Rocco comforted by the Angel, disposing of an equally elusive material.
