This set of four impressive lacquer panels comes from China and dates to the turn of the century in the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). Each panel has a deep black background with five figural insets of various materials like jade, semi-precious stones, ivory or wood.
These insets depict vases with flowers, turtles, birds, amulets, writing utensils and censers.
The inlays are partially finished in hand painting or accentuated with gold paint.
They feature rich carving and chiselling.
The panels can be divided into two similar pairs, revealing differences only on second glance. Each of the panels is decorated with a Chinese character in gold paint and high relief.
These read: Qing (feeling); Fang (green grass; sent of plants); Xin (believe) and Yu (what is left). The panels have a magnificent carved cinnabar lacquer frame in high relief, each.
These are decorated with finely carved flowers and garlands on the front and a meandering relief decoration on the outer rims.
There is an ornamental bronze mount on the top of each panel. The four lacquer panels are in very good condition with only slight traces of age and wear as well as very few, tiny nicks and hairlines.
The panels measure 108 cm (height) by 32 cm (width) each.
