FRAGMENT DE HAUT-RELIEF. PHILOCTÈTE. Le héros est présenté assis sur un rocher, dans une nudité glabre. Autour de son cou un manteau drapé retombant à l’arrière dans son dos et sur le rocher. Cette posture ainsi que l’anatomie rappelle sans équivoque les différentes représen- tations de Philoctète lors de son séjour forcé à Lemnos. Le héros, en possession des flèches et de l’arc d’Héraclès, participa à l’expédition achéenne contre les Troyens ; cependant il n’atteignit pas Troie avec les autres chefs : lors de l’escale à Tenedo il fut mordu au pied par un serpent. La blessure devint bientôt si infectée qu’elle dégagea une puanteur insupportable, et Ulys- se ne fit aucun effort pour persuader les autres chefs d’abandonner le blessé à Lemnos lorsque la flotte passa près de cette île. Philoctète resta dix ans sur cette île alors déserte et y survécut en tuant des oiseaux avec les flèches d’Héraclès. Au cours de la dixième année de la guerre de Troie, les Achéens ont reçu une prophétie selon laquelle ils n’auraient jamais conquis Troie si Néoptolème et le propriétaire de l’arc et des flèches d’Héraclès (c’est-à-dire Philoctète) ne s’étaient pas battus avec eux. Ulysse partit donc pour l’ambassade de Lemnos, accompagné de Néoptolème et de Diomède, et convainquit Philoctète de les rejoindre en lui promettant les soins des fils d’Asclépios, les méde- cins des rangs grecs. The hero, in possession of the arrows and the bow of Heracles, participated in the Achaean expedition against the Trojans; however he did not reach Troy with the other leaders: during the stopover in Tenedo he was bitten in the foot by a snake. The wound soon became so infected that it gave off an unbearable stench, and Ulysses made no effort to persuade the other leaders to abandon the wounded man to Lemnos as the fleet passed close to this island. Philoctetes remained for ten years on that then deserted island and survived there killing birds with the arrows of Heracles. During the tenth year of the Trojan War the Achaeans received a prophecy that they would never have conquered Troy if Neoptolemus and the owner of Heracles’ bow and arrows (i.e., Philoctetes) had not fought with them. Ulysses therefore left for the embassy to Lemnos, accompanied by Neoptolemus and Diomedes, and convinced Philoctetes to join them by promising him the care of the sons of Asclepius, the doctors of the Greek ranks.
