Frans Francken hat dieses Bildmotiv, das als Sinnbild für Barmherzigkeit und Armenspeisung im frühen 17. Jahrhundert sehr beliebt gewesen ist, in verschiedenen Varianten dargestellt, zweimal im Hochformat und zweimal im Querformat. Unser Bild ist nahezu identisch mit dem Gemälde von 1605, das sich im Brotmuseum zu Ulm befindet (U. Haerting: Frans Francken II, 1989, Kat. Nr. 164-167). Frans Francken painted this motif several times in various formats. It was highly popular in the early 17th century as a symbol for compassion and charity towards the poor. Francken painted two variations in portrait format and two in landscape. The present work is almost identical to a painting from 1605 housed in the Brotmuseum in Ulm (U. Haerting: Frans Francken II, 1989, cat. no. 164-167).
