Provenienz Galerie Schmela, Düsseldorf; Privatsammlung, Nordrhein-Westfalen Ausstellungen Düsseldorf 1965 (Galerie Schmela), Georges Mathieu, Einladungskarte Nr.7 Als einer der Hauptvertreter des Tachismus prägte der französische Maler Georges Mathieu mit der "Lyrischen Abstraktion" eine Strömung des Tachismus, die sich durch Spontanität, Geschwindigkeit und das Unbekannte, durch Einbildungskraft und Risiko auszeichnet. Auf der Suche nach neuen Ausdrucksformen experimentierte Mathieu mit Maltechniken und es entstanden "drippings", indem er flüssige Farbe auf die Leinwand tropfte, oder Werke, bei denen er die Farbe unmittelbar mit den Fingern auftrug. Wie in dem vorliegenden Werk „Redorte“ wird der, bis dahin in seinem Gesamtwerk unübliche, "tubisme" - ein direkter reliefartiger Farbauftrag von der Tube auf die Leinwand - zu einer seiner favorisierten Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten. Diese Technik spiegelt sein Streben nach Unverfälschtheit wieder, die er sich durch die spontane und intuitive Ausführung erhofft und die sein Innerstes zum Ausdruck bringt. Der Malakt war für den Künstler von so großer Bedeutung, dass er den Entstehungsprozess großformatiger Bilder ab 1957 wiederholt vor Publikum inszenierte. Seine Arbeitsweise erinnert an die Methode der japanischen Kalligraphie, deren wichtigste Grundsätze unter anderem die Konzentration, die Improvisation und die Geschwindigkeit sind. Auch dieser Grundsatz von Mathieus distinktiver Formsprache wird in dem vorliegenden Bild deutlich. Indem er durch die Leere auf der Leinwand und die Beseitigung aller figurativen Formen einen Schauplatz für seine malerische Entladung schafft, eröffnet er dem Betrachter die Freiheit, das Bild durch Selbstinterpretation und Intuition inhaltlich zu füllen. Nur durch eine solche Auseinandersetzung ist es dem Betrachter möglich, den künstlerischen Aussagen und Gedanken Mathieus näher zu kommen. Die Malerei ist für den Künstler ein Motiv "[...] um zu schreien, um zu sprechen, um ein Drama auszudrücken, und zwar meines und das aller Menschen." Provenance Galerie Schmela, Düsseldorf; private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia Exhibitions Düsseldorf 1965 (Galerie Schmela), Mathieu, invitation card no.7 As one of the leading figures of Tachisme, the French painter Georges Mathieu influenced a trend, 'Lyrical Abstraction', within the Tachisme movement, which is characteristic of spontaneity, velocity and the unknown, of imagination and risk. In the search for new forms of expression, Mathieu experimented with painting techniques and 'drippings' were the result ­- in which he dripped liquid paint onto the canvas - or works in which he applied the paint directly with his fingers. As in the present work 'Redorte', the 'Tubisme' - a relief-like application of paint directly from the tube onto the canvas which was uncharacteristic of his works until then ­- became one of his favoured means of expression. This technique reflects his pursuit of unadulterated quality which he hoped to achieve with this spontaneous and intuitive execution and which expresses his innermost soul. The painting process was of such great importance to the artist that, from 1957 onwards, he repeatedly staged the development process of large-scale paintings in front of an audience. His working method is reminiscent of Japanese calligraphy, its most important principles being, among other things, concentration, improvisation, and velocity. By setting the scene for his painter's outburst through the emptiness on the canvas and the elimination of all figurative forms, he gives the observer the freedom to fill the painting with content through self-interpretation and intuition. It is only this type of involvement, which makes it possible for the observer to approach Mathieu's artistic statements and thoughts. For Mathieu, painting is a motif '[…] to scream, to talk, to express a drama that is mine and that of all people'.
