In Western culture, the spider, just like weaving and thus the spider's web, is considered a symbol of meticulous and flawless work, i.e. of industry. It is also the attribute of Arachne, a great example of industriousness: the girl on the left could be identified with this mythological figure. Arachne is a figure from Greek mythology, a gifted weaver and daughter of Idmon of Colophon. She challenged Athena to a weaving competition, which she mastered with bravura.
