Vers 1735 Giambattista Tiepolo réalise un ensemble de dessins sur le thème de la fuite en Egypte. Ces six dessins appartenaient au prince Alexis Orloff avant d'être dispersés à Paris en 1920. Ces dessins exécutés à la plume et au lavis constituent une véritable trame synoptique. Ces scènes sont originales car elles montrent un moment très rarement représenté dans le parcours de la Sainte Famille. L'action se situe peu avant l'embarquement sur un frêle esquif, instant qui est lui-même l'objet d'un tableau réalisé à la fin de la vie de l'artiste (La fuite en Egypte, Lisbonne, Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga ; La Fuite en Egypte (gravure), Paris,Petit Palais). Notre dessin est à associer au Repos pendant la fuite en Egypte (Stuttgart, Staatsgalerie), qui peut être considéré dans la narration comme précédent notre dessin ou Joseph semble tirer à lui la barque. Il est surtout à rapprocher du dessin de la série dans laquelle Tiepolo a fait le choix de représenter l'âne au détriment de l'action de Joseph qui est moins compréhensible. (Voir : G. Circa 1735 Giambattista Tiepolo produced a set of drawings on the theme of the Flight into Egypt. These six drawings belonged to Prince Alexis Orloff before being dispersed in Paris in 1920. These pen and ink drawings constitute a true synoptic framework. These scenes are original because they show a moment very rarely represented in the journey of the Holy Family. The action takes place shortly before the embarkation on a frail skiff, a moment that is itself the subject of a painting done at the end of the artist's life (The Flight into Egypt, Lisbon, Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga; The Flight into Egypt (engraving), Paris, Petit Palais). Our drawing is to be associated with the Rest during the Flight into Egypt (Stuttgart, Staatsgalerie), which can be considered in the narrative as preceding our drawing where Joseph seems to be pulling the boat to himself. It is especially to be compared with the drawing of the series in which Tiepolo chose to represent the donkey to the detriment of Joseph's action, which is less understandable. (See: G.
