From the 'retour à l'ordre' of the 1920s Severini will always undergo the spell of past civilizations, he will often go to Rome, whose monuments (the Forum, in particular) will inspire several of his works. He will experiment, and make his own, techniques and ways of figurative expression of ancient Rome, from "minor" painting, to mosaics, to the Pompeian fresco.
