En 1915, il quitte Paris pour l'Italie où il est mobilisé. A partir de cette période, les rares présences humaines dans ses toiles laissent place à “une humanité de mannequins” aux visages aveugles, insensibles aux douleurs de l'âme et du corps, déshumanisés par la guerre. C'est une réponse aux horreurs des combats, c'est aussi un rappel à la mémoire fragile de l'homme, c'est enfin un engagement philosophique. De cette époque date le tableau Hector et Andromaque (1917) où dans une atmosphère tragique exprimée par un chromatisme sombre autour des rouge, vert et ocre, les “mannequins” apparaissent dans leurs habits raides aux coutures rectilignes, rapprochant leurs têtes ovoïdes et chauves. Le Trovatore apparaît en 1922. Giorgio de Chirico réutilise la même texture cloutée pour le thorax tandis qu'il libère les jambes de ce carcan, laissant apparaître les cuisses nues ou juste couvertes d'un tissu moulant. A ses côtés et à terre, une tête coupée - celle d'une sculpture antique - rappelle peut-être le dénouement tragique de l'histoire de Manrico, dit le Trouvère*, mais renvoie certainement aussi à la méditation métaphysique sur l'existence, la solitude et la mort qui nourrit l'œuvre entière de Giorgio de Chirico. Durant la décennie suivante, Giorgio de Chirico exécute trois Trovatore, “mannequins” couturés et cloutés sur toutes les parties du corps, qu'il place devant les perspectives d'arcades désertes des Piazza d'Italia. Le Trovatore devient un thème majeur repris plusieurs fois par l'artiste dans son œuvre. En 1973, de Chirico exécute ainsi un superbe Trovatore qu'il met en scène dans un univers dépouillé composé d'une seule arcade et d'ombres portées aux formes géométriques. Le Trovatore penche sa tête comme un homme vivant le ferait. L'artiste humanise son armure la couvrant d'une toge bleue tombant jusqu'aux pieds. Ce très beau tableau, dont le chromatisme s'ordonne autour de teintes chaudes, est l'un des derniers Trovatori : il a une portée symbolique très forte car enrichie par le thème de l'espérance matérialisé par la voile carrée qui coupe la ligne d'horizon. Ces Trovatore interpellaient déjà le spectateur à leur apparition, en 1922, lors de l'exposition G. de Chirico chez Paul Guillaume. André Breton qui préfaçait le catalogue de l'exposition commence ainsi : “A son image Dieu a fait l'homme. Giorgio de CHIRICO 1888-1978 IL TROVATORE, 1973 World War I marked a turning point in the life of Giorgio de Chirico. In 1915 he left Paris and returned to Italy to be drafted into the army. From this point on, the rarely present human figures that appeared in his canvases are replaced by a “humanity of mannequins” with blind faces, impervious the pains felt by the body and soul, dehumanized by war. It was a response to the horrors of combat, a reminder of the fragile memory of man and, finally, a philosophical commitment. The painting Hector et Andromaque (1917) dates from this period, conveying a tragic atmosphere expressed in dark colors of red, green, and ochre, the “mannequins” standing in their stiff raiment of rectilinear design, their ovoid, bald heads close together. Trovatore emerged in 1922. Giorgio de Chirico reuses the same nailed texture for the chest but frees the legs from this armor, leaving the thighs naked or slightly covered with clinging fabric. To the side on the ground lies a head from an antique sculpture, perhaps a reminder of the tragic termination of the story of Manrico in the opera Trovatore*, but certainly a reference to the metaphysical meditations on existence, solitude, and death that nourishes Giorgio de Chirico's entire oeuvre. During the following decade, Giorgio de Chirico executed three Trovatori, all “mannequins”, sewn and nailed all over their bodies and placed before a perspective of the deserted arcades of the Italian Piazzas. The Trovatore becomes a major theme, repeatedly appearing in the work of the artist. In 1973, De Chirico executed a superb Trovatore surrounded by a sparse universe of a single arcade and geometrically shaped cast shadows. The Trovatore hangs his head just like a human being. The artist humanizes his armor, covering it with a blue toga from head to feet. This very beautiful painting whose color scheme is based on warm tones, is one of the last Trovatori. It carries a strong symbolic charge, enriched by the theme of hope materialized by the square veil that cuts the horizon line. These Trovatore fascinated those who saw them as soon as they were exhibited in 1922 in the G. de Chirico exhibit by Paul Guillaume. André Breton, who wrote the preface to the exhibit's catalogue, began as follows: “God created man in his own image.
