Herkules, der griechisch-römische Heros, ist in der abendländischen Kunst ein äußerst beliebtes Sinnbild der Stärke. Dementsprechend ist er häufig als Skulptur oder auf Gemälden dargestellt worden. Langetti selbst malte den Heros auf mehreren Gemälden, aber eher selten als ruhende Gestalt wie hier. Eine vergleichbare Version datiert Stefani Mantovelli erst um 1675, während er für unsere Fassung eine Entstehung um 1650 vorschlägt (op. cit. S. 153). Obwohl der Genueser Maler Langetti schon früh nach Rom zog und sich bei Pietro da Cortona weiterbildete, blieben die frühen Einflüsse der heimischen Malerei in seinem Werk immer spürbar. Mehr noch als Cortona haben ihn später die Neapolitanischen Caravaggisten wie Ribera, Fracanzano und Luca Giordano beeinflusst. Mit diesen gehört er zu den sogenannten „tenebrosi“, jenen Malern, die ihre monumentalen Figuren durch einen starken Lichtkontrast modellierten. Auffallend bei Langetti ist dabei sein besonderes Interesse für mythologische Figuren der Antike, die, wie Stefani Mantovelli beschreibt, seine eigene stoische Denkweise reflektieren.Giovanni Battista Langetti Hercules Oil on canvas (relined). 96 x 112 cm. Hercules, the Greco-Roman hero, is a popular symbol of strength in western art and is often depicted in paintings and sculptures. Langetti himself painted the hero in several works, but rarely as a resting figure as in this painting. Stefani Mantovelli dates a similar version to around 1675, whilst he suggests a date of circa 1650 for the present work (op. cit. p. 153). Although the Genoan painter Langetti moved to Rome early on in his career to study under Pietro da Cortona, his early works remain strongly influenced by the painting of his home land. He was later more inspired by the Neapolitan Caravagesques like Jusepe de Ribera, Cesare Fracanzano and Luca Giordano than by his teacher Cortona. Like these Neapolitan artists, Langetti was counted among the "tenebrosi", who were known for their depictions of monumental figures modelled with stark contrasts of light and shadow.
