In 1952, he had just received the American citizenship, he moved to Italy. The present work from 1953 depicts a female torso that is dissolved in radial spheres and lines, reminiscent of the shape of a jar. Condition: The drawing is in very good condition. The sheet is minimally wavy. It is mounted under a mat and framed. The dimensions of the sheet are 70 x 50 cm and the frame measures 95.5 x 73.5 cm. Pavel Tchelitchew (1898-1957) Pavel Tchelitchew left Russia in 1920 and lived in Berlin from 1921 to 1923. In the early phase very abstract in style, described Constructivist and Futurist and influenced through the studies with Aleksandra Ekster in Kiev. In 1923, he moved to Paris, where he got acquainted with Gertrude Stein, who became an important benefactor of his career. In Paris, he joined the group of the Neo-Romanticists of the 1930s. One of his first solo exhibitions took place at MoMA in New York in 1930. Together with his partner, the author Charles Henri Ford, they settled in New York in 1934. Tchelitchew is known for developing a meticulous technique. He experimented continuously with new styles, until he included multiple perspectives and elements of Surrealism and phantasy into his paintings. Designs for the ballet groups of Diaghilev and Balanchines in Paris and the ‘Blaue Vogel’ in Berlin were also very successful. He became a US citizen in 1952, just before retiring in Italy.
