Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, bekannt als Guercino, ist einer der berühmtesten und produktivsten Maler des siebzehnten Jahrhunderts, dessen Ruhm sich sehr schnell in ganz Europa verbreitete und ihn von einem "enfant prodige" in einem der wichtigsten Interpreten des Barock verwandelte. Viele seiner Werke sind im berühmten "libri dei conti", dem Auftragsbuch, aufgeführt, das die Liste der Werke von Guercino und seiner Werkstatt von 1629 bis 1666 enthält. Auch detaillierte Beschreibungen der Themen der Gemälde, die Verkaufspreise sowie die Namen der Kunden, Käufer und Vermittler sind hier verzeichnet Am 12. Oktober 1650 finden wir einen Hinweis auf eine Halbfigur, die David mit dem Kopf von Goliath darstellt, geschaffen für Herrn Ludovico Fermi von Piacenza. Das für Fermi geschaffene Gemälde wurde von Luigi Salerno mit einem Gemälde identifiziert, das sich 1983 in den Trafalgar Galleries in London befand und 1999 vom Museum of Western Art in Tokio erworben wurde. Im Jahr 2011 kam schließlich unser Bild ans Licht, das sich in der Größe leicht von der japanischen Version unterscheidet und sich durch einige Farbvariationen und eine kompaktere, dichtere Materialität auszeichnet. Das Vorhandensein eines zweiten Gemäldes mit der gleichen Komposition hat in den letzten Jahren eine Debatte über die Reihenfolge und Autorschaft der beiden Werke sowie über eine mögliche Beteiligung der Werkstatt ausgelöst. Zuerst deuteten Andrea Emiliani und Nicholas Turner die japanische Version als das im Auftragsbuch erwähnte autographische Gemälde von Guercino aufgrund der verschiedenen Untermalungen, die es beinhaltet, während unser Werk als Replikat des Künstlers unter Beteiligung der Werkstatt für einen noch unbekannten Kunden galt: Trotz des schärferen und überzeugenderen Farbspektrums schien die Ausführung weniger flüssig. In einer Mitteilung von 2017 änderte Turner seine Position und identifizierte in unserem Gemälde jenes Bild, das 1650 für Herrn Fermi geschaffen wurde. Das im Museum of Western Art in Tokio aufbewahrte Werk sollte laut Turner hingegen als ein erster Entwurf betrachtet werden, mit dem der Künstler die für den Kunden von Piacenza bestimmte Komposition studierte. Der Grund für Turner's Meinungsumschwung liegt in der eingehenden Auseinandersetzung des Wissenschaftlers mit der malerischen Praxis des Künstlers aus Cento: Guercino fertigte früher Probeversionen seiner Werke an und verwendete für diese Materialien, die von minderer Qualität waren. In den für seine Kunden bestimmten Gemälden verwendete er hingegen kostbarere und teurere Pigmente. Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Guercino, is one of the most famous and productive painters of the seventeenth century, whose fame spread very quickly throughout Europe and transformed him from an "enfant prodige" into one of the most important interpreters of the Baroque period. Many of his works are listed in the famous "libri dei conti", the book of commissions, which contains the list of Guercino's works and those of his workshop from 1629 to 1666. Detailed descriptions of the themes of the paintings, the selling prices and the names of customers, buyers and agents are also listed here. On the 12 October 1650 there is a reference to a half figure representing David with the head of Goliath, created for Mr Ludovico Fermi of Piacenza. The painting created for Fermi was identified by Luigi Salerno with a painting that was in the Trafalgar Galleries in London in 1983 and acquired by the Museum of Western Art in Tokyo in 1999. In 2011, our picture finally came to the surface, slightly different in size from the Japanese version, with a few colour variations and a more compact, denser materiality. The existence of a second painting with the same composition has triggered a debate in recent years about the order and authorship of the two works and about a possible involvement of the workshop. At first Andrea Emiliani and Nicholas Turner interpreted the Japanese version as the original painting by Guercino mentioned in the book of commissions because of the various underpaintings it contains, while our work was considered as a replica of the artist with the participation of the workshop for an as yet unknown customer: Despite the sharper and more convincing colour spectrum, the design seemed less fluid. In a statement from 2017, Turner changed his position and identified in our painting the picture created for Mr Fermi in 1650. According to Turner, the work kept at the Museum of Western Art in Tokyo was to be regarded as the first draft with which the artist studied the composition intended for the client from Piacenza. The reason for Turner's change of opinion lies in the scientist's in-depth examination of the painterly practice of the artist from Cento: Guercino used to make trial versions of his works, using materials of inferior quality for them. In the paintings intended for his customers, on the other hand, he used more precious and more expensive pigments.
