Ciardi wurde in Venedig als Sohn eines österreichischen Regierungsbeamten geboren. Er studierte ab 1861 an der Akademie in Venedig und reiste später durch ganz Italien. Aufenthalte in Florenz, Rom und Neapel ermöglichten ihm den Kontakt zu Künstlern der Macchiaioli-Gruppe und der Schule von Resina. Diese Begegnungen hinterließen deutliche Spuren in seinem Spätwerk. Das vorliegende Gemälde ist charakteristisch für Ciardis Darstellungen der 1870/80er Jahre. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Venedig entdeckte er neue malerische Blickwinkel auf seine Heimat. Er stellte nun die Lagune in den Bildvordergrund und rückte die Stadtansicht weiter in den Hintergrund. Während dieser Jahre beschäftigte sich der Maler häufig mit den gleichen Darstellungen, veränderte jedoch stets kleine Details oder Lichtverhältnisse, in einer ähnlichen Weise wie die zur gleichen Zeit arbeitenden Impressionisten. Die Boote, die hier im Zentrum der Komposition stehen, formen eine Art Grenze zwischen den verschiedenen Bereichen von Himmel, Wasser und Ufer. Die dunklen Konturen der Schiffe setzen sich von der hellen, sommerlichen Landschaft und den sonnenbeschienenen Segeln ab. Solche markanten Licht-Schatten-Kontraste zeugen vom Einfluss der Macchiaioli-Gruppe. Zu Lebzeiten wurden Ciardis Werke auf zahlreichen Ausstellungen in Venedig aber auch in Mailand, Turin, Genf, Florenz, Neapel und San Francisco gezeigt. Born in Venice to an official of the Austrian government, Ciardi enrolled in 1861 at the Venice Academy of Fine Arts. He later travelled through Italy, to Florence, Rome and Naples, coming into contact with the Macchiaioli and the artists of Resina School who deeply influenced his artistic development. The present work is typical of his 1870s and 1880s output when the painter, returning to Venice, discovered a new dimension of the city and started depicting the lagoon, placing Venice as a distant background. From this point, the artist began depicting the same subject several times, adding or subtracting small details or changing the lighting in a way that almost recalled the experiments of contemporary Impressionist painters. The boats, in the center of the composition, almost set the confines between the different areas of the sky, the sea and the shore. Their dark profiles are set in the summer atmosphere with their bright sails, creating a sharp colour contrast influenced by the Macchiaioli. An acclaimed artist during his lifetime, Ciardi participated regularly in exhibitions in Venice, as well as in Milan, Turin, Genoa, Florence, Naples and San Francisco.
